What is the difference between marroni and chestnuts? The chestnut burr can contain up to seven fruits. The marroni burr only holds a maximum of three. Chestnuts have a dark, thick, and hardy shell. Marroni have a reddish shell, sometimes striped depending on the variety. Chestnuts are small, flat, and compressed. Marroni are larger, rounder, and have a more regular and heart-shaped appearance. The skin of chestnuts is more difficult to remove because it embeds into the cavities of the pulp. On the contrary, the marroni’s skin is easily removed as they are smoother. Chestnuts are slightly less flavorful (their best use is in flours and creams). Marroni, however, are sweeter and crunchier and are perfect for use both in pastry, desserts, and savory dishes as they remain firm even during prolonged cooking.
