Tuna onions are a delicious appetizer to be served cold or at room temperature, spread on slices of bread. I prepared the onions with tuna sauce using Tropea onions, which have a sweet and delicate flavor. Of course, you can also use other sweet and high-quality red, white, or yellow onions. The onions are first cooked in sweet and sour sauce, and then when they are cold, they are seasoned with the tuna sauce. I recommend leaving them in the fridge for a few hours before consuming them for an even tastier experience. How to make Tuna Onions
Let’s start preparing the Tuna Onions, peel the onions and slice them finely, preferably like I did with a mandoline to get thin and uniform slices for even cooking.
Place the onion in a pan, add a splash of extra virgin olive oil, a
tablespoon of sugar,
the vinegar,
and the water, put on the heat and cook the onion until it becomes soft,
When it is becoming soft, add another tablespoon of sugar, and if necessary, to soften and cook the onion further, add a few tablespoons of water. Continue cooking until the onion is very soft and well wilted, and there is no more liquid in the pan. The cooking time is indicative because it varies greatly depending on the type of onion.
When the onion is soft and dry,
transfer it to a bowl and let it cool down.
Prepare the tuna sauce, pour into the blender glass, the capers,
the tuna after removing the oil
and the mayonnaise,
blend for a few seconds until a smooth sauce is obtained.
Pour the tuna sauce into the bowl of onions
and mix well to incorporate it thoroughly.
Cover the bowl with a lid or plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for a few hours before serving.
How to store Tuna Onions
Store them in the refrigerator for 2/3 days in a well-sealed container
