The ORANGE LIQUEUR or ARANCELLO, simple and fragrant, made with alcohol, oranges and sugar, is very easy to make at home and is ideal to serve as a digestif at the end of a meal, perhaps as an alternative to the more common limoncello. The recipe is easy to prepare but, as with all liqueurs, you will have to wait at least 25 days before enjoying it. But rest assured, the final result will more than reward you for the wait.
I recommend choosing oranges, preferably organic, ripe and fragrant so they can release all their citrus aroma and give a wonderful, cheerful color. This arancello, besides serving it as a digestif, can be used as a syrup for cakes or to make very fragrant creams. Also, as I have experienced, it makes a perfect gift, able to show our affection and, why not, cheer up our friends.
- Difficulty: Very easy
- Rest time: 25 Days
- Preparation time: 20 Minutes
- Cooking methods: Stovetop
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: Autumn, Winter
Ingredients
- 8 oranges (untreated (not chemically treated))
- 2 cups pure alcohol ((approximately 500 ml))
- 2 cups water ((approximately 500 ml))
- 1 1/4 cups sugar ((approximately 250 g))
Steps
The preparation of the ORANGE LIQUEUR or ARANCELLO is really simple and within everyone’s reach.
Wash carefully, dry and peel the oranges using a vegetable peeler or a sharp knife, trying to avoid the white part which would give a bitter taste to the liqueur.
Put the peels to macerate together with 2 cups (about 500 ml) of alcohol in a glass jar with an airtight lid, in a cool place away from light for at least 15 days, remembering to shake the container at least twice a day.
After 10 days filter the liquid to remove the peels.
Place the water and sugar in a small saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then let it cool completely. Combine the cold syrup with the previously filtered alcohol. Mix everything well and bottle.
Let the bottles rest for another 10 days, always in a cool, dark place, before consuming.

STORAGE
Once ready you can store the orange liqueur for a long time in the fridge or freezer: the presence of alcohol and sugar will prevent it from freezing.
