The apple squares are delicious and very soft treats to enjoy anytime of the day. From breakfast, to the end of a meal, or as a tasty snack, one leads to another.
The preparation of this dessert is very simple and doesn’t require ingredients that are hard to find. The apples are sliced thinly, soaked in lemon juice, and enclosed in a soft and fragrant shell with cedar liqueur (which can be replaced with limoncello).
The dough resembles shortcrust pastry but is more elastic and, indeed, soft, thanks to the addition of yogurt. In short, this dessert is absolutely fantastic and worth trying right away.
After all, apple desserts are always highly appreciated for their simplicity and deliciousness, which is hard to resist.

Ingredients for Apple Squares
- 4 apples
- 3 3/4 cups flour
- 1 1/8 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 lemon
- 1 shot glass cedar liqueur
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 egg
- 1 packet baking powder
- to taste powdered sugar
Preparation of Apple Squares
In a large bowl, mix the flour with 1 cup of sugar, the grated lemon zest, the pinch of salt, the cedar liqueur, the yogurt, the egg, the diced butter, and the sifted baking powder.
Quickly work the ingredients by hand until you get a smooth and homogeneous mixture.
Roll out the dough on a lightly floured board and make a thin sheet.
With half of the sheet, line a 11×16 inch rectangular pan, previously buttered and floured.
Peel the apples and slice them thinly. Drizzle with lemon juice and mix with the remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar.
Spread the apple slices over the dough and cover with the remaining dough. Press the edges well with your fingers to seal.
Bake the apple squares in a preheated oven at 356°F for 30 minutes.
After the baking time, let them cool and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
Then, cut into 24 squares.
You can make this treat even tastier by mixing the apples with a teaspoon of cinnamon. If you want, you can also add raisins (1/3 cup) and pine nuts (1/4 cup).
