Wine Donuts with Chocolate

The wine donuts with chocolate are one of those recipes I always prepare with great pleasure: simple and natural ingredients, no eggs, no butter, and all the aroma of traditional homemade wine donuts. They are crumbly, delicious, and literally one leads to another.

The preparation is quick and accessible to everyone. The dark chocolate chips pair perfectly with the red wine, creating a fragrant and irresistible dough. I often make them when I crave a tasty snack during the day, and they are also delightful at breakfast with a cup of milk or hot tea.
Every year, when Christmas comes, they become one of my favorite homemade gifts. I prepare small hand-decorated packages, personalized for every person I care about. I always add a bag of tea or fruit infusion and the result is a simple but thoughtful gift that smells like home and always makes everyone happy. A real treat to share.
If you also love rustic and genuine sweets, this recipe is absolutely a must-try. Now I’ll leave you to the preparation: it will be a pleasure to get your hands in the dough together!
See you soon

Ingredients for wine donuts with chocolate

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sunflower seed oil
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2.8 oz dark chocolate chips
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3 tbsp sugar

Useful tools

  • Baking sheet (oven)
  • Bowl

Preparing wine donuts with chocolate

  • In a bowl, pour the wine, oil, and sugar. Mix with a fork until the mixture is homogeneous. Add the sifted flour, baking powder, and finally the chocolate chips, mixing until you get a soft and workable dough.
Form a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, making it easier to shape.
After the time has passed, lightly flour the work surface and break off small pieces of dough. Work them a few seconds between your hands, form small logs and join the two ends, pressing well to seal them. The donut shape is ready. Pass each donut in granulated sugar and continue until you finish the dough.
Arrange the donuts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, with the sugared side up. Space them well as they slightly puff up during baking.

Bake the donuts in a preheated oven at 392°F (200°C) for 25–30 minutes. The time may vary depending on your oven, so check that they reach a nice uniform golden color.
When they are ready, let them cool completely on a wire rack before serving. They become crumbly, fragrant, and irresistible.

Storage and useful tips

The donuts keep perfectly for 10–12 days in a tin box or a glass jar with an airtight lid.
For a gluten-free version, substitute the flour with a universal gluten-free mix, adding an extra tablespoon of dough if it turns out softer.
For a touch of freshness, you can scent the dough with lemon or orange zest.
If you want to intensify the chocolate flavor, also add 1 tablespoon of sifted cocoa powder.
For Christmas gifts, pack them in transparent bags with a colored ribbon: they always make a great impression.
