How to prepare Nutella puff pastry croissants
To prepare Nutella puff pastry croissants, start by preparing the hazelnut crunch: it’s not essential, but it adds a delightful crunch. Put the hazelnuts in a food processor and coarsely chop them (2). Set them aside. Unroll the puff pastry and spread it with a layer of Nutella, leaving about 0.39 inches free around the entire circumference (3).
Sprinkle the hazelnut crunch on top (4), keeping one or two teaspoons aside to decorate the croissants. With a knife, divide the puff pastry into 16 wedges for mini croissants, or into 8 wedges if you prefer larger croissants (5). Gently detach them and roll them up starting from the outside (6).
The tip of each wedge should be placed at the bottom of the croissant, so it doesn’t lift during baking (7). Place the Nutella croissants on a parchment-lined baking tray, well spaced as they will puff up in the oven (8). Brush them with a little water (9).
Garnish first with some granulated sugar (10), which will make them more golden, and then with the hazelnut crunch you set aside (11). Bake the puff pastry croissants in a preheated oven at 392°F for 10-12 minutes for smaller croissants, or for 15-18 minutes for larger croissants. Take them out of the oven when they are puffed and golden (12).
Let them cool slightly before removing them from the tray. You can serve the Nutella puff pastry croissants as they are or sprinkled with powdered sugar, for breakfast or a snack. They are also a nice idea for kids’ snacks to take to school.
Storage
The puff pastry croissants stay crispy for 2 or 3 days at room temperature.
Tips and variations
Instead of Nutella, you can try other spreads, like chocolate, pistachio cream, peanut butter, or jam to have a different treat each time.
