Mulled Wine is a hot drink made of wine and spices typical of the Christmas period. Already in the Middle Ages, cold spiced wines like Hippocras were consumed. The habit of drinking cooked wine spread mainly in Northern European countries and later spread worldwide. Mulled wine is very easy to prepare; just heat the wine with sugar and spices, with variations that also include citrus fruits and apples. Regarding the wine, there are different customs; in Germany, they use red wine, while in Northern Italy and Austria, they use white wine. The alcohol content of this delightful beverage varies depending on how it’s cooked, decreasing with prolonged low flame cooking. In my version, I added untreated mandarins and oranges to the classic base of wine and spices.
