Homemade Flatbread with Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Great for dinner, a snack, or for appetizers and birthdays. Loved by many, the flatbread is the queen of street food. It has very ancient origins; it is a simple recipe with very few ingredients for a tasty dish. It is made of flour, lard or olive oil, bicarbonate or yeast, salt, and water. Tradition says it should be cooked on a terracotta plate, but a pan works fine at home.

  • Difficulty: Very Easy
  • Cost: Very Cheap
  • Rest time: 30 Minutes
  • Preparation time: 10 Minutes
  • Portions: 10 flatbreads
  • Cooking methods: Stovetop
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All Seasons

Ingredients for Homemade Flatbread with Extra Virgin Olive Oil

  • 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 7 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt (1 and 1/2 teaspoons)
  • 1 tsp instant yeast for savory recipes (1 and 1/2 teaspoons)

Preparation of Homemade Flatbread with Extra Virgin Olive Oil

  • In a bowl, combine flour, salt, oil, and bicarbonate, then gradually add the water, kneading well until you have a smooth dough.

  • Let it rest for at least 30 minutes covered with plastic wrap. Divide the dough into 6/8 balls, depending on the size you want; fewer balls mean larger flatbreads, more balls mean more but smaller flatbreads. Let them rest for another 30 minutes, still covered with plastic wrap. Roll out the balls with a rolling pin; they should be about 1/8 inch thick.

  • Heat the pan, place the flatbread and cook for about 2 minutes on each side. When done, stack them and fill them hot. Put mozzarella on half of the flatbread with cooked ham, mozzarella with salami, or just cold cuts. Fold in half, place on a grill, and heat the flatbread again.

Notes

Unleash your creativity, prepare it as you like with ham, mozzarella, arugula, cheese, salad, tomatoes, etc… It will be delicious…
