The chicken drumsticks with soy sauce are a really delicious and succulent second course, with slightly oriental flavors, the perfect combination of slightly salty soy sauce with strong-flavored chestnut honey, a perfect sweet and sour combination that will surely win you over. The drumsticks will be beautifully golden and crispy on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside. The chicken marinade is made with soy sauce, chestnut honey, sweet paprika, and turmeric. I didn’t use salt in this recipe because the soy sauce is already very salty and flavorful on its own. If you prefer, you can opt for a soy sauce with a lower salt percentage. Ingredients to prepare chicken drumsticks with soy sauce
- 6 chicken drumsticks
- 4.5 oz soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons sweet paprika
- 1 tablespoon chestnut honey (leveled)
- to taste extra virgin olive oil
- Half onion
- to taste ground turmeric
- to taste sesame seeds
- 2 ladles water (room temperature)
Steps to prepare chicken drumsticks with soy sauce
To prepare the chicken drumsticks with soy sauce, first clean the drumsticks, checking for any feathers, then place the drumsticks in a large bowl and pour the soy sauce over them. Add 1 leveled tablespoon of honey; I used chestnut at home, but if you don’t have it, a wildflower honey will be fine, it will just slightly change the flavor. Chestnut honey definitely has a stronger taste. Also add 2 teaspoons of sweet paprika, a pinch of ground turmeric, and then mix the chicken well to flavor it. Cover with plastic wrap and marinate in the refrigerator for about 1 hour, occasionally turning the chicken in the bowl to give it more flavor.
Take the chicken out of the fridge and leave it for a moment at room temperature. In the meantime, finely chop half an onion and sauté it in a large pan with some extra virgin olive oil. Then add the drumsticks and brown them for a couple of minutes, turning them. Now add the chicken marinade sauce and a couple of ladles of room temperature water and cover everything with a lid, always on low heat, and cook them for 45 minutes. Turn the chicken occasionally. After 45 minutes, remove the lid and thicken the sauce. This will take about 5 minutes on a higher flame. Sprinkle the top with sesame seeds if you like.
Your chicken drumsticks with soy sauce are ready to be served and enjoyed! Serve them hot!
Storage and Tips
You can store the drumsticks in the refrigerator for 1 or 2 days at most.
If you like, you can use some chili pepper.
If you want even stronger flavors, you can add 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika and one of hot paprika.
At the end of cooking, if you like, you can also add almond flakes on top of the chicken drumsticks instead of sesame seeds.
