Steps to Make Mummy Hot Dogs with Puff Pastry
To make mummy hot dogs with puff pastry, first unroll the rectangular puff pastry on a work surface and, with the help of a pizza cutter (or a smooth-bladed knife), cut strips about 1/8-1/6 inch thick. These will be the bandages for your mummies. You will need 2 strips for 1 small hot dog.
The strips can be of slightly different sizes. Start at the top of the hot dog and continue to cover almost the entire thing. Just leave enough space to put the eyes. Place all your mummies on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and brush the pastry with milk using a brush. Meanwhile, preheat the static oven to 350°F. Bake them for about 25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.
In the meantime, prepare the eyes. In this case, I made them with a slice of American cheese, using a toothpick to carefully carve out not-too-large eyes, and added small pieces of peppercorns inside.
When the hot dogs are ready, take them out of the oven and let them cool. Once they have slightly cooled, you can attach the eyes gently. Wait for a moment, or the cheese will melt. Your mummy hot dogs with puff pastry are ready to be devoured!
Storage and tips
You can store your mummies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2 days
If you don’t like eyes made of American cheese, you can opt for mayonnaise or just use black peppercorns or cloves
You can pair them with ketchup sauce
You can also use large hot dogs or cut them in half
