Peppers with Breadcrumbs

The peppers with breadcrumbs are a very tasty and flavorful side dish, prepared throughout Italy even though the traditional recipe comes from Southern Italy. It’s a very quick but delicious recipe. The peppers are enriched with breadcrumbs (or grated bread as in the recipe I propose), capers, and pecorino. You can also add garlic if you wish. They are perfect to pair with a meat or fish dish. • Cuisine: Italian

Ingredients to prepare peppers with breadcrumbs

  • 3 bell peppers
  • 1 tablespoon salted capers (about 14 capers)
  • 1 tablespoon pecorino (generous amount)
  • 3 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 1 pinch dried oregano
  • to taste salt
  • to taste extra virgin olive oil

Steps to make peppers with breadcrumbs

  • To prepare the peppers with breadcrumbs, first wash and dry the peppers well, remove the stem and internal seeds, and cut them into pieces or strips as you prefer. Heat some extra virgin olive oil in a pan and add the peppers, cooking them for about 20 minutes while adding a bit of water. Meanwhile, prepare the dressing that will be added to the peppers. You can use breadcrumbs as I did, or if you prefer, you can use stale bread. In this case, you need to chop it using a food processor. Then, put it in a bowl, add the capers (I used salted ones, which I rinse well under running water before using), salt, and 1 tablespoon of grated pecorino. If you like, you can also add dried oregano.

  • Towards the end of cooking, add the bread dressing with pecorino and capers over the peppers and let them flavor well until the breadcrumbs become nicely golden and the peppers are soft.

  • They are ready to be served as an appetizer or side dish.

Storage and Tips

You can store the peppers with breadcrumbs in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

If you wish, you can add garlic if you like. You can choose capers in vinegar or salted.

You can chop homemade bread if you want a slightly coarser texture, or choose breadcrumbs for this type of recipe.
