Halloween is approaching this year, and I really wanted to make these witch finger cookies for my daughter. They are simple shortbread cookies with a peeled almond that simulates the nail. They look spooky but are delicious! You can also make them together with your kids! You will only need flour, butter, sugar, 1 egg, and a pinch of salt. If you want to prepare a starter and a savory pie for that special evening, you can also try:

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Cheap
  • Preparation time: 40 Minutes
  • Portions: about 25 cookies
  • Cooking methods: Oven
  • Cuisine: Italian

Ingredients to make witch fingers

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 7 tbsps butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs (medium)
  • 1 pinch salt
  • as needed blanched almonds (about 25, 1 for each finger)

Tools

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Stand mixer kitchenaid

Steps to make witch fingers

  • To prepare the witch fingers, first make the shortbread using cold butter from the fridge and eggs at room temperature. In the bowl of the stand mixer, pour the all-purpose flour, chopped butter, sugar, a pinch of salt, and lastly the 2 eggs. The dough will now start to become quite compact. Transfer the dough to a work surface and compact it evenly with your hands. When you have obtained a smooth dough, wrap it with plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

  • After the 30-minute rest, take the shortbread out and cut it into pieces, then shape them into finger-sized sticks. Dust the work surface with some flour and start creating the sticks, pressing with a finger to place the almond, which will form the nail. Also, lightly press the edges with your fingers to form the knuckles and use a knife to create the finger wrinkles.

  • When they are ready, place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and transfer the sheet to the refrigerator for about 15 minutes (this will help the fingers maintain their original shape). Meanwhile, preheat the static oven to 356°F (180°C) and bake the witch fingers for 20 minutes; they should not be overcooked.

  • When the cookies are ready, take them out of the oven and let them cool before serving. To make them even more delicious and spooky, add some strawberry or red berry jam. The fingers are ready to be eaten!
