Orange and Chocolate Porridge: The Breakfast That Will Make You Change Your Mind About Oats
How many attempts does it take to fall in love with porridge? If, like me, you’ve always given up because of its texture, know that you’re not alone. After countless trials in search of a nutritious and filling breakfast, the real turning point came with the Tiramisu Porridge. But it was with the Orange and Chocolate version that I discovered the true secret: porridge isn’t boring, it just needs to be spoiled with the right ingredients!

The Energy Combo: Vitamin C and Dark Chocolate
This version isn’t just a breakfast, it’s a burst of pure energy that will make your taste buds sing. Authentic cooking celebrates the union of superfoods and pleasure! Food as pure nourishment naturally comes from the daily consumption of whole rolled oats, even better if organic, for steady energy release and care of your gut microbiota.
The citrusy note of orange brings Vitamin C, essential for the immune system during cold months, giving the porridge a fresh citrus hint. The indulgent touch of chocolate then transforms your breakfast into a “fit” dessert, rich in flavonoids and good mood.

The Secret to an Irresistible Texture
The trick to loving porridge is playing with contrasts. If the mushy effect of oats has always put you off, add creaminess with melted chocolate or some crunch like chopped hazelnuts. The freshness of orange balances the density of the chocolate, creating a perfect harmony that will make you forget past failures.

  • 1/2 cup whole rolled oats
  • 2/3 cup oat milk
  • 1/4 cup orange juice (fresh)
  • 1/2 teaspoon agave syrup
  • A few segments orange (or mandarin)
  • 0.4 oz 85% dark chocolate

Tools

  • 1 Saucepan
  • 1 Wooden spoon
  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Teaspoon
  • 1 Citrus juicer
  • 1 Sieve
  • 1 Knife

Steps

  • Making the orange and chocolate porridge is really quick and easy: pour the rolled oats into a saucepan and add all the plant milk.

  • Squeeze a small orange, strain the juice and also collect any pulp left from juicing. Add them to the milk and oats. Turn the heat to high and bring to a boil.

  • Lower the heat and, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon, let it thicken slightly. It will take about 5 minutes.

  • Be careful: it shouldn’t become a mush, just gain some body while remaining semi-liquid. Turn off the heat and let it cool slightly; this helps it set to the right consistency. Then sweeten with agave syrup and stir.

  • Now, roughly divide the ingredients to create two layers: pour half of the porridge (about 4 tablespoons) into the bottom of a bowl. Add orange segments previously peeled “supreme” style and cut in half. Garnish with some chocolate melted beforehand in the microwave for 2 minutes at 750W or in a bain-marie.

  • Create a second layer with the remaining porridge and another 2-3 orange segments.

  • Finally, add the remaining melted chocolate to finish.

  • And voilà… the orange and chocolate porridge is ready to be enjoyed!

Storage

👉Porridge is best enjoyed immediately, which is why I recommend preparing it the same morning.
If you prepare it in advance, it keeps in the fridge for 2 days in a glass jar with an airtight lid, but add the chocolate and fresh orange segments only at serving time. The acids in the orange can prematurely ferment plant milk, altering the taste. Oats will continue to absorb liquid while resting, so if the porridge becomes too thick, add a splash of hot water or plant milk and stir vigorously.

👉If you prefer it warm, use the microwave for 30 seconds or gently reheat in a saucepan. Then garnish.

Tips, notes, variations and suggestions

🟣For a real aromatic boost, toast a handful of chopped almonds with a pinch of cinnamon. The warmth of the spice will bridge the acidity of the orange and the intensity of the dark chocolate, or add orange zest which should be organic or untreated.

FAQ (Questions & Answers)

  • 1. How do I avoid the “mush” effect in porridge?

The secret is the ratio between liquids and solids and the cooking time. If you prefer a firmer texture, try Overnight Oats (no cooking), letting the oats rest in plant milk and orange juice in the fridge overnight. In the morning it will be firm and velvety.

  • 2. Why choose 85% chocolate?

If your goal is a “fit” breakfast, opt for a dark chocolate of at least 75-85%. Not only does it have less sugar, but its intense flavor pairs better with the acidity of orange. If you go lower than this percentage, I recommend not adding extra sweetener.
