Nutella-filled hearts — delicious and special. Valentine’s Day, the most romantic celebration of the year, is almost here and I can’t help but take the opportunity to prepare and leave you with a few Valentine’s recipes. What I want to tell you about today is a recipe for delightful puff-pastry hearts that enclose a sweet surprise. In the center: Nutella®, a flaky pastry around it and all the flavor of a gesture made with love!
Because on Valentine’s Day love is also prepared in the kitchen. Small sweets that win you over at the first bite and are even more special because they’re made by hand and from the heart. The dough is very easy to prepare: a super thin pastry and a tasty filling. And if you don’t like Nutella®, you can replace it with jam or the preserve flavor you prefer. I fried the hearts, but you can also bake them in the oven. Let’s go to the kitchen and prepare for our loved one some irresistible puff pastries with Nutella!

Ingredients for puff pastries with Nutella

  • 1 egg
  • 3 tbsp + 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 zest of half an orange (untreated)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • as needed Nutella®
  • as needed powdered sugar (for decorating)
  • 1 cup vegetable oil (for frying)

What you need

  • Pasta sheeter
  • Cutters

How to prepare Nutella-filled hearts

  • You can prepare the dough by hand or with a mixer. In a bowl, mix the whole egg with the sugar. Add the melted butter and the milk, then stir. Add the flour, the grated zest of half an orange (untreated) and the baking powder. Knead well and for a while until you have a soft but not sticky dough.

  • Shape into a ball, wrap it in cling film and let the dough rest at room temperature for half an hour. After resting, take the dough and divide it into small portions. It’s easier to use a pasta sheeter to get very thin sheets. You can also use a rolling pin, but it will take a bit more work.

  • You need to roll out the sheets very, very thin — I rolled mine at the second-to-last setting on my pasta machine. Using a heart-shaped cutter, cut out many hearts. Place half a teaspoon of Nutella® in the center of half of the hearts. Cover with another heart and press all around to seal. Prepare them all the same way, rolling out and reusing the scraps.

  • Now drop a few at a time into the hot vegetable oil. Let them puff up and turn golden on all sides. Remove them with a slotted spoon and drain them on kitchen paper. Dust them with powdered sugar.

See you tomorrow with a new recipe, hugs, Loredana

Loredana’s Tips

If you prefer, you can bake them in the oven. Place them slightly spaced on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake in a preheated oven at 356°F for 16-18 minutes.

With these quantities I got 20 pastries, but it depends on how thin you roll the pastry and the size of the heart cutter you use.
