SHORTBREAD HEARTS WITH JAM for a sweet Valentine’s Day

Shortbread hearts with jam, the special cookies to celebrate love. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and the heart is the symbol par excellence of this holiday. I confess that I do not like to limit celebrating love in all its forms to just one day. Because love can take on a thousand and more different shades but equally precious ones. So go ahead with many Sweet and savory Valentine’s Day recipes, and if they are heart-shaped, they are perfect. The recipe I want to share today is for soft and delicious Braided heart-shaped cookies filled with berry jam. The recipe is simple, and you can prepare the shortbread in advance, making it very easy to make the cookies later. For the shortbread, I used a recipe with some oat flour, resulting in a rustic-flavored shortbread, soft and delicious. Oat flour is rich in fiber and protein, providing long-term satiety and helping to control blood sugar levels. So let’s head to the kitchen and prepare the Shortbread Heart Cookies together.

Ingredients for Shortbread Hearts

  • 1 egg
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 5 tbsp butter
  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 3/4 cup oat flour
  • 1/2 lemon zest (untreated)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 7 oz berry jam (or other flavor)
  • 3 tbsp milk (to brush the cookies)
  • 2 tbsp sugar (for decorating)
  • to taste powdered sugar (for decorating)

How to prepare Shortbread Cookies with Jam

  • You can prepare the shortbread by hand or with the help of a mixer. Mix the butter cut into small pieces with the sugar and the flour in a bowl. Then add the grated zest of half an untreated lemon and the baking powder.

  • Add a medium egg and knead well quickly until you have a soft but not sticky dough. Form a dough ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and let it rest in the fridge for about an hour.

  • Roll out the shortbread on a lightly floured work surface to form a large rectangle about 6 inches wide on the short side. Divide it in half on the long side. Spread the berry jam on one half.

  • Cover with the other shortbread. Use a pastry wheel to cut strips about 1/2 inch wide. Roll each strip onto itself and then try to shape a heart by joining the two ends.

  • Prepare them all in the same way. Arrange them slightly spaced on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush them with milk and decorate with sugar. Let the Heart Cookies with Jam bake in a preheated oven at 350°F in static mode for 15-16 minutes.

See you tomorrow with a new recipe, hugs, Loredana
