THE CRISPIEST AND TASTIEST TROPEA ONION FRITTERS YOU HAVE EVER TASTED

Tropea onion fritters simple and quick to prepare. After 15 years, I returned to Calabria for a vacation, and as a souvenir of a wonderful holiday, I brought home some of the sweetest Tropea Onions. Sometimes I can find them at my local supermarket, but I assure you they are not as sweet as the ones bought directly from the place, maybe it’s due to packaging and distribution times, because I have tested that over time they gradually lose their sweetness. The sweetness of this vegetable depends on the climate in which it is grown and the proximity to the sea. The Tropea Onion contains vitamin C and E, iron, selenium, iodine, zinc, and magnesium. Generally, I prefer to add it to salads and consume it raw, but it is also suitable for many recipes. Today I want to tell you how I prepared Red Onions in Batter crispy and delicious. Prepared this way, they are perfect for an appetizing starter, a special side dish, or even an aperitif that captivates everyone. I first soaked the onion slices in milk to lose that slight sharpness, but if your onions are as sweet as mine, you can skip this step. Let’s then rush to the kitchen and together prepare the Tropea Onions in Batter

Ingredients for Fried Onions in Batter

  • 1.1 lbs Tropea red onions
  • 0.85 cups sparkling water (cold)
  • 3.5 oz flour
  • to taste salt
  • 0.65 cups milk
  • 1.25 cups vegetable oil (for frying)

How to Prepare Fried Onions in Batter

  • Clean the onions and slice them into round slices about 0.16-0.2 inches thick. Place the onion slices in a wide plate and soak them in milk. Leave them this way for about 2 hours.

  • Prepare the batter. Pour the flour into a bowl. Add a pinch of salt and gradually pour in the cold sparkling water, stirring with a whisk to prevent lumps from forming. After 2 hours, let the onion slices dry on paper towels.

  • Heat plenty of vegetable oil in a small, deep pan. To test the oil temperature, dip the handle of a wooden spoon into it, and when many bubbles form around it, the temperature is right.

  • Dip the onion slices first in the batter and then in the hot oil. Let them brown on all sides and then drain them on paper towels.

Loredana’s Tips

These onion fritters are only suitable for frying, so you cannot cook them in an air fryer or oven.

They are delicious to enjoy freshly made, as is generally the case with all fried foods, but if any are left over, you can store them for a day and reheat them for a few minutes in the oven or microwave.

If you prefer, you can replace the sparkling water with the same amount of beer.
