Puff Pastry Cannoli to Fill, very simple and quick to make even for those with little kitchen experience. Ideal for any type of filling, whether sweet or savory, and so small they are great served savory as an appetizer, or sweet in a buffet. I find them also beautiful to present, especially if they are decorated with various seeds or crunchy pieces of any kind of nuts. Usually, I choose the decoration based on the filling I will insert. I usually prepare them the day before and fill them only at the last moment.
If you like puff pastry, I suggest you read the following recipes:
- Cost: Economical
- Rest time: 1 Hour
- Preparation time: 10 Minutes
- Portions: 16 cannoli
- Cooking methods: Electric oven
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: All seasons
Ingredients
- 1 pack rectangular puff pastry
- 1 egg yolk
- to taste pistachio crumbs for decoration
Tools
- 16 Metal Cones
- 1 Parchment Paper
Preparation
Remove the rectangular puff pastry from its package and fold it in half to obtain two perfectly equal parts. Open it again and with a sharp knife cut it into 16 strips. I always start with the first half, cutting it in half, then into 4, and finally into 8, but everyone can use the method they prefer.
Once the strips are ready, wrap them in a spiral around the cones (the ones I chose for this recipe are small and mobile because they have a sort of vertical slit), trying to close the tip well.
Once the cones are ready, place them gradually on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush them with an egg yolk and to taste, you can sprinkle them with pistachio crumbs, or sesame seeds, and so on. However, they are perfectly fine even without any type of nuts, so it’s up to us to choose how to present them, also based on the filling we will insert.
At this point, we can bake them in a preheated oven at 356°F, leaving them to cook for about 8/10 minutes. After this time, take them out of the oven and let them cool at room temperature.
Serve our Puff Pastry Cannoli to Fill, with the sweet or savory filling that we like best.
Tips
Puff pastry cannoli can be kept for several days, but over time they tend to soften.
It is advisable to place them on a tray and cover them gently with a paper towel, because the less we handle them, the better: they are quite delicate and tend to break easily.
