Whole Wheat and Crispy Pizza Tongues

Whole wheat and crispy pizza tongues, a delicious snack or dinner without having to go to the pizzeria. A quick method that will allow us to prepare them in a short time and with great ease. Therefore, a recipe suitable for everyone, even for those less experienced in the kitchen and ideal to prepare with children. Delicious with tomato, but also with potatoes, with vegetables, in short, ideal with any topping we desire. Once you get your hands in the dough, I recommend preparing a lot and freezing them, so you have them available whenever you desire. Once cooked, they are really crispy, but if you want them more similar to those from the bakery, use plenty of extra virgin olive oil.

Whole Wheat and Crispy Pizza Tongues
  • Cost: Very economical
  • Rest time: 10 Minutes
  • Preparation time: 15 Minutes
  • Portions: 6 tongues
  • Cooking methods: Electric oven
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All seasons

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour or type 2 flour
  • Half packet instant yeast for savory preparations
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 2/3 cups tomato sauce
  • to taste oregano

Tools

  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Rolling pin
  • 1 Pastry cutter
  • 1 Baking sheet
  • 1 Kitchen scale

Preparation

In a large bowl, pour the flour and yeast and mix with a fork. Add the water gradually, and when it is completely absorbed, also add the extra virgin olive oil and mix all the ingredients well. At this point, add the salt, but I preferred not to use it.

Turn the dough onto the work surface and knead for about 10 minutes. Form a ball, put it back in the bowl, and let it rest for about 10 minutes. Cover with a cloth.

Take the dough again and divide it into six equal parts, using a small scale. At this point, roll them out with the rolling pin until you get a thickness of about a quarter of an inch. Repeat the operation several times because they will not stretch immediately, it will take several passes.

Place the tongues on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and top them with the tomato sauce, cooked for about 15 minutes and cooled. Bake in a preheated oven at 480°F and let them cook for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and season with extra virgin olive oil and dried oregano.

Sprinkle with salt and distribute the seasoning using a kitchen brush.

Serve our Whole Wheat and Crispy Pizza Tongues immediately because they are really exceptional when hot, but even at room temperature, they are not bad at all.

Tips

Keep them in the refrigerator for a few days, then reheat them in the microwave oven.

You can also freeze them both fully cooked and partially cooked.

However, remember to thaw in the refrigerator and never at room temperature.
