I couldn’t miss the chance to create something tasty, beautiful, and above all practical for Valentine’s Day! Savory puff pastry hearts are perfect to surprise with a romantic, tasty, and very easy-to-prepare appetizer.
Puff pastry is a true ally in the kitchen when it comes to quick and creative recipes. Just a pinch of imagination can transform it into something special! For these puff pastry hearts, I chose a delicious filling of cream cheese and speck, but you can customize them with cooked ham, ricotta and spinach, cheese and pesto, or any other combination that excites you.
Have fun experimenting and make your Valentine’s Day even more special with these delicious puff pastry hearts!
- Difficulty: Very easy
- Cost: Very inexpensive
- Preparation time: 10 Minutes
- Portions: 10 Pieces
- Cooking methods: Oven
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: Valentine's Day
Ingredients
- 1 sheet of puff pastry (rectangular)
- 1.8 oz cream cheese
- 4 slices speck
Tools
- 10 Toothpicks
- 1 Pizza Cutter
- 1 Baking Tray
Steps
Let’s start by unrolling the rectangular puff pastry. To prevent it from breaking, I recommend taking it out of the refrigerator at least 5 minutes before so it will be more elastic and easier to work with.
Now let’s proceed by spreading the cream cheese over half of the pastry, leaving about half an inch of border free to facilitate closing.
Add the slices of speck, covering the entire cream cheese. Then fold the part without filling over the filled part and seal the edges well.
Now, with the help of a pizza cutter, slice vertical strips about 0.4 inches wide. Twist each strip on itself and, joining the two ends towards the center, form a heart. To prevent them from opening during baking, secure the joined ends with a toothpick (see video).
Once all the hearts are ready, place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake them in a preheated static oven at 392°F for about 20 minutes, until golden brown. Remove from oven and serve your savory puff pastry hearts as a delicious appetizer for your Valentine’s Day aperitif.
