Rolled French Fries in Air Fryer

The rolled French fries (or crunchy chips) are an original way to present the classic French fries, making them even more tasty. They are really easy to make; you just need to follow some simple steps and they will turn out spectacular. You can choose to cook the rolled fries in the air fryer or in the oven or you can fry them in plenty of seed oil: this is definitely the most unmatched version, but the air fryer version gets very close (although they will never be the same, be wary of those who offer recipes identical to fried ones) and will be much healthier and lighter, with much less oil, in this case extra virgin olive oil.

Below you will find all three cooking methods, so you can choose the one you prefer or the one you have available.

Rolled French Fries in Air Fryer
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Economical
  • Preparation time: 15 Minutes
  • Portions: 2 People
  • Cooking methods: Air Frying
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All seasons

Ingredients

  • 2 large potatoes
  • to taste salt
  • to taste extra virgin olive oil

Tools

  • Air Fryer

Steps

  • First, we peel the potatoes and slice them into very thin slices: I recommend using a mandoline, so you can ensure they are thin as this is one of the essential steps for this recipe.

Once sliced, we transfer them to a bowl with plenty of cold water and let them soak for about 15 minutes.

We dry them well one by one using cotton towels. At this point, we take a slice and very carefully start to fold it onto itself, rolling it. We then secure it with a toothpick. To ensure they don’t break, I recommend going slowly without abrupt movements. If they break anyway, it’s not a problem: they’ll still be great even if not rolled correctly! So secure those with a toothpick and continue.

  • We transfer the potatoes to a bowl and add a drizzle of EVO oil and a pinch of salt (both to taste), and mix well. We place them in the basket of the air fryer without parchment paper or trays and cook at 356°F for about 15 minutes, turning them halfway through. Alternatively, we can bake them in a preheated oven at 374°F for 25 minutes. Alternatively, you can fry them in plenty of sunflower seed oil, skipping the previous step where we add oil and salt to the potatoes.
Once ready, we remove the toothpicks and enjoy. Bon appétit!

Tips for you

✔ The potatoes must be sliced as thin as possible, otherwise, they won’t roll correctly.

✔ I want to clarify that the potatoes in an air fryer or oven will NEVER be identical to fried ones, so I can’t tell you to expect the same result because, precisely, it’s not the same. Be wary of potatoes that seem obviously fried, I can tell you that in an air fryer they will be similar but not the same, they won’t have a thousand bubbles but only a few, but they will still be lighter than fried ones (undoubtedly) and delicious.

✔ You can add the spices you prefer!

✔ I recommend using the BBQ mesh to insert directly into the non-stick basket of your air fryer: the mesh protects the non-stick coating of the basket (which will remain as new) and allows the food to cook evenly, allowing air to pass through 360 degrees. You can find it on Amazon by clicking here.

✔ Alternatively, you can use perforated parchment paper, which allows air to pass from below to above. You can find it on Amazon by clicking here: link.

✔ For this recipe, I used the air fryer COSORI 4.7 which you can find on Amazon by clicking here.
