Spiral Potatoes: Foolproof Method

If you’re looking for a creative and scenic idea to serve classic potatoes, these spiral potatoes are definitely for you. Start with a whole potato and with a simple spiral cut, you’ll achieve a surprising result, perfect to bring to the table in an original way without complications.
I’ll teach you a foolproof method, compared to those circulating on the web that have gone viral, but unfortunately almost never work. In this case, however, making them is really simple and accessible to everyone, especially without any tools.
To season them, you only need a few ingredients and the spices you prefer. I cooked them in an air fryer for a lighter and faster version, but nothing prevents you from preparing them in the oven (you’ll find the exact instructions in the procedure) or even frying them for an even crispier result. Try them: they are easy, beautiful to see, and irresistible to taste!

Spiral Potatoes: Foolproof Method
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Very Cheap
  • Preparation time: 10 Minutes
  • Portions: 1 Piece
  • Cooking methods: Air Frying
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All Seasons

Ingredients

  • 1 medium-large potato
  • to taste extra virgin olive oil
  • to taste salt
  • to taste hot paprika

Tools

  • Air Fryer

Steps

  • For this recipe, we start by choosing a medium-large potato. After washing and peeling it with a peeler, dry it well. Then insert a long skewer in the center, passing through from one end to the other.

At this point, place the potato on a cutting board and, holding the knife slightly inclined, start scoring the surface from one end to the other, gradually rotating the potato. The knife should reach the skewer, allowing for a continuous spiral cut. Once the entire potato is scored, gently spread apart the parts along the skewer to give it a more open and aesthetically pleasing shape.
Attention: there’s a “viral” method online that involves using a grater for this step, but it doesn’t work because it doesn’t allow for a clean and continuous cut, risking breaking the potato.

  • In a small bowl, mix extra virgin olive oil, salt, and hot paprika or the spices you prefer. Then, brush the potato surface well with the seasoning.
Cook in the air fryer at 374°F for 15-20 minutes until golden and crisp. Alternatively, bake in a static oven at 392°F for about 25 minutes, or fry in plenty of hot sunflower oil (338–356°F) for 4-5 minutes until well golden.

  • Once ready, we just need to enjoy the spiral potatoes hot and crispy. You can serve them as is or with your favorite sauce. Bon appétit!

Tips for You

• Always use a sturdy skewer (wood or metal): those too thin risk breaking during cutting.

Did you know? A viral method circulates online to achieve spiral potatoes using a flat grater (the one with the long cut at the bottom, similar to a mandolin). In theory, you should slide the potato while rotating it to get the spiral.
In practice? After several attempts, I can tell you it doesn’t work at all: the cut isn’t deep enough, you risk damaging the potato, and the result is anything but precise.
This is why I recommend my alternative method: simple, foolproof, and accessible to everyone, without special tools!
