How did you come up with preparing a Christmas French Toast with Panettone? Well, dear friends, I always told you, and never hid, that I am a true sweet tooth! So, browsing through Instagram and Pinterest, I stumbled upon some French Toast recipes with Panettone. Some with too much egg in my opinion, others that used baking instead of pan-frying, and others more health-conscious that used coconut oil for cooking instead of butter. Then there are those who use the air fryer, but that’s another topic I don’t want to open here.
Returning to the choice of “unleashing” my greediness, I opted to use the classic and always delicious berries for the final garnish. This time I didn’t caramelize them like for the Pandoro Log with custard precisely to not further increase the calories of the dessert with Panettone that I’m proposing to you today.
The French Toast or Pain Perdu, translated from French means lost bread, is nothing more than the reuse of stale bread (which would have been wasted because it hardened) soaked with beaten egg with milk and a pinch of salt. You grease the pan with some butter and fry both sides until you create the classic golden crust of the French Toast! There are initial mentions in cookbooks already in Roman times where, however, the bread was only immersed in milk and then cooked. Of course, it wasn’t the French Toast we know today but a distant relative of it. It was then re-elaborated by the French cuisine which served it with game and meats because it wasn’t yet a sweet dish but a recycled bread. Widely spread throughout Europe under the name of golden soups.
We indeed learned, when I told you about Soups, Minestrone, and Zuppe in the recipe of Vegetable Minestrone with Pumpkin that the term suppe doesn’t only indicate soup or another broth, but it also referred to bread immersed in a liquid ingredient as in the French Onion Soup Recipe.
The French Toast was also proposed as tostées dorées but the version we all know today is the more recent one, most likely with American influences, since ingredients like cream, peanut butter, and sugar in the beaten eggs were introduced. As for spices, cinnamon, like in my case, nutmeg, ginger, and vanilla made their way in. In short, everyone has their own French Toast in every part of the world. So today I present my version, a simple, quick, and delicious recipe!
Before moving on to the recipe, the list of ingredients, and the doses needed to prepare the Christmas French Toast with Panettone, I want to tell you a small and short story. I often talk about my two grandmothers, Licia and Sandra, and my mom Roberta. They are the source from which I draw for many of my recipes. Well, this time I thought I did it on my own. I thought, in fact.
This morning I recorded the video recipe that you find below the first photo, uploaded the video to the YouTube channel, and sent it to my dad. My Paciccio replied like this: “This is good. Your grandmother Licia used to make them 30 years ago with sandwich bread and served them for breakfast with Nutella or jam!”
Did you get how Grandma Licia treated her grandchildren and relatives well? And I thought I discovered the recipe to recycle panettone in a greedy way. She was ahead 30 years ago, UNIQUE! I’m happy to think that I proposed one of her recipes again, even if unintentionally and unconsciously, it makes me really grateful to have had a grandmother like her in my life.
Below you will find other recipes for recycling panettone or recycling pandoro that I have proposed to you over the years. The most famous is undoubtedly that of the Log of Pandoro with Custard which surpassed 300,000 views between the YouTube channel, the reel on Facebook, or the video on Tik Tok.

Ingredients for Christmas French Toast
The doses indicated below are perfect to prepare 8 slices of Panettone or Pandoro, calculating therefore a portion of two slices per person. If you need to prepare more quantities of French Toast with Panettone, double the doses calculating that by doubling them you will get double the portions of my recipe. If instead, you are just two people, still use a whole egg and the coffee cup of milk will still provide enough liquid to soak the slices of panettone.
- 8 slices panettone (in my case without candied fruit and one with berries)
- 1 egg (you might need two if you soak the panettone slices a lot)
- 1 coffee cup milk
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 pinch ground cinnamon
- to taste powdered sugar
- to taste berries (or other ingredients with which to serve the French toast)
Tools to Prepare French Toast with Panettone
- 1 Bowl
- 1 Fork
- 1 Pan
- 1 Knife
- 1 Powdered sugar shaker
- 1 Paper towels
- 1 Spatula
Steps of the Christmas French Toast Recipe with Panettone or Pandoro
As you can imagine, the preparation of the French Toast with Panettone is very simple, suitable for everyone. Very few ingredients and just three steps. The first thing to do is: slice the Panettone or if you want to recycle the pandoro, you can use it as the base of this recipe. Set the slices aside and take a bowl with high edges. Pour the coffee cup of milk inside and crack the egg.
With the fork, lightly beat, then sprinkle with a pinch of salt and add the cinnamon. The amount of cinnamon is to taste, if you like it, feel free to add more. Now let’s move to the stove.
Take a nice wide pan with a non-stick bottom. Melt about 1 oz of butter in it and proceed as follows: pass one slice of panettone at a time in the bowl with the beaten egg, soaking it on both sides, and place it in the pan over medium heat. Let it cook for about 2 minutes per side. That beautiful and classic crispy crust of the French Toast should form. Then arrange the slices on a tray or plate covered with frying paper or paper towels. In this way, the slices of toasted panettone will shed the excess butter.
Then take the serving plates and plate up. As indicated at the top of this recipe, I calculated at least two slices per person. If you are already full or if you serve the Christmas French Toast with Panettone for a snack, you can also serve just one slice per person. Then sprinkle with powdered sugar and decorate with berries. All that’s left is to get a knife and fork and enjoy your Holiday Brunch! I’ll be waiting for you every day here in my kitchen with many easy, quick, and affordable recipes like this one, I wish you a good appetite!!!
Tips and Variations of the Christmas French Toast Recipe with Panettone or Pandoro
You can store the slices of French Toast with Panettone in a cake container for two days. My advice is to store them without the powdered sugar, which will be absorbed by the moisture of the eggs, and without the berries. When it is time to enjoy our dessert with panettone, you can heat each slice in the microwave or in the oven for a few seconds. Dust with sugar and serve.
You can also get creative with the final decorations or garnishes. Last night, we enjoyed this dessert with my cousin Leonardo and my partner at our favorite place, Marca Reale. Just warmed, the scent of cinnamon fills the room again, so we thought of various creams to pair. From the classic and indispensable Nutella, to Dulce de Leche since we were at our friend Alejandro‘s house, or pistachio cream. Chocolate flakes, hazelnut crumbs, pistachio crumbs. In short, open the pantry as some open sachets from the Christmas Holiday days are always found.
Bon appétit and Happy New Year my dear followers!
