Puff Pastry Braids with Jam

The Puff Pastry Braids with Jam and Spreadable Cheese are easy to prepare. I’d also say it’s one of the quick recipes for a delicious and protein-rich breakfast. The spreadable cheese I chose is rich in protein since I’m on a diet and can’t use too fatty ingredients. The jam itself is light, made from berries, thus free from many added fats. A perfect dessert for breakfast or a snack, also to prepare with children. The puff pastry is the classic one, whether round or rectangular doesn’t matter, you just need to cut it the right way. You can also find the video recipe to see how to cut the pastry to make the puff pastry braids with jam and spreadable cheese.

I had already made a braid with a chocolate bar a few months ago and you can find the link below the introduction so you can read and try it especially.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 1.4 oz jam (berry)
  • 1.4 oz spreadable cheese (protein)
  • 1 tbsp honey

Tools

  • 1 Spoon
  • 2 Knives
  • 1 Oven
  • 1 Parchment paper
  • 1 Brush
  • 1 Baking tray
  • 1 Small bowl

Steps

  • The first thing to do is to roll out the puff pastry and cut out 4 large rectangles, approximately 4 inches by 2-2.5 inches, using a sharp knife. The remaining pastry will be used to make the strips for braiding. Place the spreadable cheese in the center first, then the berry jam (or the jam you’ve chosen) using a knife.

  • At this point, still with the sharp knife, cut the puff pastry strips, not too large or they will cover most of the braid. Start placing them with slight pressure on the edges to ensure they don’t detach during oven baking. Preheat the oven to 356°F. Place the braids on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Keep them well spaced apart so they don’t stick to each other if the jam or cheese leaks during baking. Use a kitchen brush to spread honey on the surface of the puff pastry braids with jam. Now that our puff pastry braids are finally ready, we’re set for baking.

    breakfast dessert
  • Bake the puff pastry braids for about 20 minutes, checking after the first 15 minutes as your oven may cook the pastry much faster than mine. You will just need to see the golden-brown color on the surface, which will indicate they are perfectly cooked. Once out of the oven, place them on a cooling rack to cool without direct contact with the tray, allowing the inside moisture to dry. Ready to enjoy this dessert? Whether for breakfast or a snack, it won’t disappoint you! I can only wish you Bon Appetit!

Variations:

You can vary the jam in this recipe, choosing among all the flavors you like or using the jam you’ve had open in the fridge for some time and didn’t feel like using on simple toast. You can swap the spreadable cheese with pastry cream if you have it ready; you can also choose to make it at home by following my recipe, which you can find by clicking here. Or you can add dried fruits inside them to make them even more delicious. The last possible variation is to eliminate the honey and replace it with milk or egg white. I think I have offered you the widest choice of possible variations.

Storage:

You can store the puff pastry braids in a classic cake container for a few days; they will be less crisp but still delicious. Keep in mind that you’ll only make four with my recipe, so there will hardly be any leftovers as they are delicious!
