Today I present an easy recipe to make Sweet Puff Pastry Hearts with Nutella and Jam. Why is it easy? Because if you follow and read my blog Le Ricette di Bea you know that I’m not very good with decorations, my manual skills are zero. However, I fell in love with a Reel I found while scrolling through videos on Instagram, where a girl made Heart-Shaped Shortcrust Pastries with wonderful braided pastry decorations. Recognizing my weakness in “frills,” I decided to experiment with puff pastry. So, I made Filled Puff Pastry Hearts many times, and in the end, I’d say they somewhat resemble Nutella-filled hearts.

The Filled Puff Pastry Hearts are a perfect dessert to serve to your sweetheart for a Valentine’s Day Dinner. They require a few minutes of preparation since you’ll need to cut the puff pastry into heart shapes and make the strips for the decorations, while the cooking time takes about 10 minutes.

Crispy and versatile, you can fill these delicious pastry hearts with Nutella or apricot, peach, blueberry, or strawberry jam, whichever you prefer.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (rectangular)
  • 1.41 oz Nutella®
  • 1.41 oz jam (in my case peach)
  • 1.35 tbsp milk

Tools

  • 1 Knife
  • 1 Cutter
  • 1 Parchment Paper
  • 1 Oven
  • 1 Brush
  • 1 Small Bowl
  • 2 Teaspoons

Steps

  • Start by spreading the rectangular puff pastry sheet on a work surface. If you’re lucky and have a heart-shaped cutter, you can start by creating the four puff pastry hearts to use as the base of our dessert. If you’re unlucky like me and don’t have the cutter and don’t want to buy it because you’ll only use it once a year, do this. Take a piece of paper, a pen, and an espresso cup. I’ve already explained how easy it is to draw nice hearts in the recipe for Valentine’s Day Club Sandwich, you just need to pay attention to closing the heart as you’ll have to complete it freehand. See the beautiful hearts I managed to draw?!? For the decorative strips, however, you’ll proceed freehand with the knife, strips all of the same width. I divided the puff pastry in half with the knife, on one half I made the four hearts while on the other side the strips to place over the creams. Now let’s proceed with the recipe which, as you can guess, is easy as now we just need to assemble everything.

    tools for Valentine's dessert
  • Turn on the oven in static mode at 356°F and proceed to spread the Nutella or the jam you have chosen on the base of our dessert, that is, on the four puff pastry hearts. As you can see from the photos, I made two with Nutella and two with jam. We are greedy, it is true, but we are coming out of the Christmas holidays and therefore all four with Nutella would have been too much. The jam makes them lighter and perfect for a snack or breakfast.

Once the hearts are spread, begin to overlap the strips of puff pastry, to secure them to the edges, which we will have left free of cream or jam, apply a small pressure to fix them and prevent them from coming off during baking. After placing all the strips, it is time to brush the surface of our delicious hearts with milk. With the help of a kitchen brush, proceed.

Bake the sweet puff pastry hearts for about 10 to 12 minutes max. You will see the puff pastry swell and the surface turn golden, this is the sign that our dessert is ready to serve.

I just want to remind you that you will find new recipes on the blog’s social channels every day, and I wish you bon appétit!!!

Variations of Sweet Puff Pastry Hearts:

You can fill the Sweet Puff Pastry Hearts with the jam you like best, with custard and maybe add some chocolate chips or pistachio cream. If you want to make the cream at home, you’ll find my recipe on the blog: Grandma’s Custard.
