Pears in Red Wine, an elegant, fragrant, and incredibly easy dessert to prepare with pears and mulled wine.
Perfect for cold days and beyond, these pears slowly cooked in red wine transform into a warming dessert with a strong and spicy flavor. Their soft texture and bright red color make them not only delicious but also stunning to serve, perhaps with a sprinkle of powdered sugar or a light cream.
This recipe is perfect for ending a winter dinner with a refined touch. The secret is in the wine: I chose a mulled wine, already enriched with spices like cinnamon and citrus, which enhances the flavor of the pears and envelops them in an irresistible aroma. If you don’t have ready-made mulled wine, you can use a good full-bodied red wine and add cinnamon, orange peel, and other spices such as star anise and cloves to achieve the same aromatic effect.
Another strength of this dessert is its versatility: you can serve it warm on cold winter evenings or chilled for a refreshing contrast. Additionally, the recipe is naturally gluten-free and lactose-free, making it perfect for those with intolerances.

Recipe for Pears in Red Wine
Start the preparation of pears in red wine by weighing in a small pot the red wine (I used already flavored mulled wine), sugar, and a teaspoon of cinnamon.
Put on the heat for 5-10 minutes or until the sugar is fully dissolved.Wash the pears, cut them in half, and remove the seeds with a teaspoon or a melon baller.
Place the pears in the pot with the red wine.Cook the pears for about 20 minutes, turning them after about 12-13 minutes.
Remove them from the pot and let the red wine syrup reduce for another 5-10 minutes. Finally, plate the pears in red wine: start with the syrup and then add the pears. Continue with a bit more syrup and finally some powdered sugar.
Serve immediately with a scoop of ice cream or some cream if desired.

FAQ
What type of pears should I use for this recipe?
The best pears are Kaiser, Abate, or Williams because they have firm flesh that holds up well during cooking without falling apart.
What wine is best for cooking the pears?
If you can’t find ready-made mulled wine, you can use a full-bodied red wine like Merlot, Nero d’Avola, or Chianti.
How can I make the dish even more delicious?
You can serve the pears with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or English custard for a perfect contrast between hot and cold.
Are pears in red wine suitable for children?
Cooking reduces the alcohol in the wine but does not completely remove it. For a child-friendly version, you can replace the wine with grape juice or pomegranate juice.
