Pulled Chicken in Slow Cooker

Pulled chicken in slow cooker, a delicious reinterpretation of the famous pulled pork made with chicken breast and cooked in a slow cooker.

This recipe is very simple to prepare and requires only a couple of steps. Cooking in the slow cooker makes the chicken so tender that it will fall apart with a fork.

Pulled chicken is the ideal recipe for filling sandwiches and buns, perhaps adding cheddar, lettuce, onion… creating always different combinations.

  • 0.88 lbs chicken breast (whole)
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 4 tbsps spices (BBQ rub)

Recipe for Pulled Chicken in Slow Cooker

  • Start preparing the pulled chicken in the slow cooker by cleaning the chicken breast from cartilage and small bones.
    Season the chicken with spices, I used my homemade BBQ rub made with smoked paprika.

  • Distribute the spices well with your hands or the back of a spoon.
    Do the same on the other side.
    Let marinate in the refrigerator for about 1 hour.

  • Turn on the slow cooker to HIGH mode.
    Pour all the barbecue sauce into the pot.
    Add the marinated chicken breasts.

  • Turn the chicken a couple of times to ensure it is well covered with barbecue sauce.

  • Cover with the lid and cook on HIGH for 4 hours. If you prefer, you can use the LOW setting, in which case the chicken will take about 7-8 hours to cook.

  • At least during the first two hours of cooking, never lift the lid.

  • Use two forks or special silicone combs to shred the chicken, while mixing it well with the cooking sauce.

  • Immediately serve the pulled chicken in the slow cooker along with all the ideal ingredients to create delicious sandwiches.

  • How long does it keep?

    You can keep the pulled chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a couple of days.
    Alternatively, you can freeze it and keep it for 3 months.

  • Can I use ketchup instead of barbecue sauce?

    Yes, but the chicken will be less flavorful.

  • Can I use boneless chicken thighs?

    I do not recommend it as they would release too much fat.
