Turkey Club Sandwich, Recipe and Origin

The club sandwich is one of the most famous sandwiches in the world. Literally ‘condo sandwich,’ it is a sandwich consisting of multiple layers of mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, and bacon. The origin of the club sandwich is traced back to 1889 when chef Danny Mears introduced it at the Saratoga Club-House.

This simplified version is made with turkey breast instead of grilled chicken breast but is still delicious and very easy to prepare.

  • Preparing the club sandwich is really simple.
Start by spreading butter on the slices of bread and toasting them on a grill or in a static oven at 300°F for about 2 minutes.

  • Cook the bacon in a hot non-stick pan without fat until crispy.
Slice the tomato thinly; Wash the lettuce leaves and remove the white part.

  • Start assembling the sandwich: Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the sandwich bread. Then add the turkey, 2 or 3 slices of tomato.

  • Continue with half a leaf of lettuce and a slice of bacon broken into pieces in this order.

  • Finish with another slice of sandwich bread and repeat the previous steps for two more layers.

  • From each of the sandwiches you just prepared, cut out 2 or 4 club sandwiches using skewers to keep the bread in place.
Serve the club sandwiches immediately, perhaps accompanied by fries or use them for an appetizer, brunch, or picnic.
