- Cost: Medium
- Rest time: 30 Minutes
- Preparation time: 10 Minutes
- Portions: about 16-20 pieces
- Cooking methods: No-bake
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: All seasons, Carnival
Ingredients
- 7 oz cream cheese (or mascarpone or ricotta, lactose-free for intolerants)
- 5 oz pavesini (or ladyfingers or dry biscuits of your choice, gluten-free and lactose-free for intolerants)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup Nutella®
- 3/4 oz hazelnuts (peeled and toasted)
- 1 tsp milk (or vegetable drink)
- 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- colored sprinkles (about 1/3 cup)
- 1 vial rum flavoring (optional)
- orange zest (preferably organic)
Tools
- 20 Cupcake Cases (small paper)
- 1 Bowl
- Spatula
Preparation
Crumble the pavesini. For convenience, I put them in a food bag and crushed them with a rolling pin.
You can replace the pavesini with ladyfingers or any biscuit of your choice. In case of intolerance, we can use egg-free, lactose-free, yeast-free, or gluten-free biscuits.
Put the crumbled pavesini in a bowl. Add the cream cheese and Nutella.
If you wish, you can replace the cream cheese (robiola or Philadelphia) with mascarpone or ricotta.
If you use ricotta, it must be completely dry. For an optimal result, place it in a sieve for at least 4-5 hours.
Add the sugar, toasted and knife-chopped hazelnuts, and mix with a fork.
Lactose intolerant people can opt for lactose-free cheese and a vegetable drink.
Finally, add the unsweetened cocoa powder, some orange zest, and a vial of rum flavoring.
Those who do not like the taste of rum can omit it, but I assure you that the chocolate rum and orange zest combination is amazing!
At this point, mix everything with your hands until you get a soft and compact dough.
Take small portions from the mixture and shape them into truffles by rolling them on the palms of your hands.
As you form the truffles, roll them in the colored sprinkles. You can easily find them in all supermarkets.
Regarding the number of truffles you can make, it varies based on the size of each piece.
I made them quite large and got 16, but if you make them smaller, you could get more than 20.
Place the decorated truffles in paper cupcake cases, and once the mixture is finished, let them firm up in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
Et voilà, your beautiful, colorful, and super delicious arlecchino truffles are ready!
They will be perfect not only for celebrating Carnival but every time you want to impress someone with zero effort!
I hope you enjoyed this super easy recipe, come back to visit soon!

How do you store biscuit truffles?
We can store the truffles in the fridge for 3-4 days, covered with food film or placed in a container to prevent them from absorbing other odors.
I have never tried freezing them because they disappear quickly! However, we could also put them in the freezer and enjoy them as ice cream bon bons. What can I use instead of cream cheese?
This is one of those cases where, fortunately, replacing one of the main ingredients does not affect the taste or even the success.
I have personally experimented with other versions of truffles, such as with mascarpone, ricotta, robiola, or indeed cream cheese.
You can choose, therefore, from those listed, not yogurt because it would not have the same consistency. You can use half ricotta and half mascarpone, or half cream cheese and half robiola, etc.
Regarding ricotta, it is better to use it only when it is dry, otherwise, sieve it well.
If you are lactose intolerant, you can obviously make these sweets using lactose-free products.I don’t like Rum, what can I use instead?
You can flavor the truffles with cinnamon powder, orange or tangerine zest, vanilla, almond flavor, or orange flavor.
What are the best biscuits to use for making truffles?
I use whatever I find in the pantry! Whether they are ladyfingers, Pavesini, dry biscuits, Digestive, etc.
If you are lactose intolerant or gluten intolerant, you can use the biscuits most suited to your dietary needs.
