Savory Swirls with Swiss Chard and Tuna

Those who have been following me for a while know that puff pastry is my perfect ally for last-minute lunches or dinners, ideal for emptying the fridge without sacrificing taste. This time, however, I wanted to experiment with something different: savory swirls, easy to prepare, delicious, and with a really special filling.
The idea comes from one of my small passions: walking through uncultivated lands and collecting spontaneous vegetables and fruits. This time I definitely overdid it, bringing home a whopping 5 kilograms of spontaneous Swiss chard. At first, I was on cloud nine: fresh, organic, and zero-cost vegetables! But after two days and four meals in which I had already consumed it, with the freezer full and no more space to store it, the joy turned into a small culinary drama. It was then that I decided to create these savory swirls filled with Swiss chard: a simple and tasty way to turn a small surplus into a real pleasure for the palate.

savory swirls
  • Difficulty: Very easy
  • Cost: Very economical
  • Preparation time: 5 Minutes
  • Portions: 6
  • Cooking methods: Oven
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: Spring

Ingredients

  • 1 roll puff pastry
  • 10 oz Swiss chard, cooked, boiled
  • 4 oz tuna in oil
  • 4 slices of cheese

Preparation

  • Start the preparation by taking the puff pastry roll out at least 10 minutes before, so it reaches room temperature. Preheat the static oven to 390°F and let it heat up. Meanwhile, take the already cooked Swiss chard and chop it roughly.
When the puff pastry is ready, unroll it leaving it on the parchment paper. Now arrange the ingredients in layers: a row about one inch wide with the Swiss chard, one with the drained tuna, and one with the cheese slices. Repeat until all ingredients are used, but leave about half an inch of edge at the end to close the roll.
Roll slowly from the filled edge to the free edge, taking care not to break the puff pastry while lifting it from the parchment paper. Seal the ends well and gently press with your fingers also the upper edge to seal everything.

  • Bake the roll in the preheated oven at 390°F and let it cook for about 20 minutes, checking from time to time to prevent it from burning.
Once ready, take it out of the oven and let it cool for a couple of minutes. With a sharp knife, cut the roll into slices about one inch thick and place them on a serving platter.
Your savory swirls are ready to serve and will be excellent both warm and cold.
