How much water in the rice cooker for steaming?

The amount of water for steaming depends on the cooking time of the food; generally, a measuring cup of water (5 oz) is needed for every 15 minutes of steaming.

COOKING TIMES for foods with a STEAMER

Here is the .pdf to print and keep handy for steaming cooking times.

How does the rice cooker work?

The electric rice cooker with a steamer is very easy to use, a practical appliance for cooking plain rice and steaming a variety of fresh or frozen foods.

INSTRUCTIONS

It has a power button (on-off), a switch with two practical light positions: a red at the bottom for the cooking function and an orange at the top for keeping warm after cooking is finished.

Rice only cooking: once all the water has evaporated, the rice cooker automatically switches to the keep-warm function, basically it turns off automatically. Be careful of the significant amount of steam released during the rice-only cooking.

Cooking with steamer: the cooking time of the food must be monitored because in this case the appliance does not turn off automatically. If during steaming, the water runs out earlier than expected, it can be easily replenished. This type of cooking releases very little steam outside.

Combined rice and steamer cooking: place the rice and water in the non-stick rice container, place the perforated basket for steaming with the food you intend to cook on top. To successfully combine the two dishes, choose rice and vegetables (or other) with the same cooking times. Even in this mode, it’s best to monitor the cooking of the foods, and the amount of steam released by the appliance during cooking is limited. Theoretically, when the liquid (water) in the rice cooker runs out, the cooking stops automatically but I haven’t tried this mode yet.

A recipe for using the rice cooker and the steamer simultaneously will be published soon.

How to prepare boiled rice with the rice cooker?

How to prepare boiled rice with the rice cooker?

First, rinse the rice several times under running water to remove the starch.

Then lightly oil the base of the rice cooker’s non-stick container, then pour in the (drained) rice and the necessary amount of water. Salt and a spice (such as chopped ginger) can be added to the liquid, or broth can be used instead of water.

Cover with the lid, and press down the switch to start cooking.

When the rice cooking cycle is finished, the cooking light (red) turns off and the keep-warm light (orange) turns on. If the rice is not yet cooked at the end of the cycle, add more liquid and restart the rice cooker.

These are the indicative cooking times for the most common types of white rice (arborio, basmati, carnaroli, jasmine, parboiled, ribe, vialone, sushi rice):

1 cup (150 g rice) + 225 g water (up to 1.25 marks on non-stick container) – 14 minutes

2 cups (300 g rice) + 450 g water (up to 2.50 marks on non-stick container) – 16 minutes

3 cups (450 g rice) + 675 g water (up to 3.75 marks on non-stick container) – 18 minutes

4 cups (600 g rice) + 900 g water (up to 5 marks on non-stick container) – 20 minutes

The amount of water needed for cooking varies depending on the type of rice and personal preferences. Additionally, keep in mind that the more water you add, the longer the cooking time will be, and personal experience and trials help to perfectly calibrate the ratio between liquids and rice.

How to prevent rice from sticking in the rice cooker?

Lightly oil its cooking container.

After the first 15 minutes of cooking, lift the lid and stir.

Turn off the rice cooker manually before all the water has evaporated.

To achieve fluffy rice, once cooked, gently fluff it with its spatula.
