I think this is the only time a spider seems cute to me. What can I say? If you’re looking for a simple and fun idea to make your Halloween party even sweeter (and a bit spooky), I suggest considering these little chocolate spiders. They are made in a few steps and win over everyone, adults and kids. I used delicious chocolate muffins as the body of my little spiders, then inserted eight chocolate sticks to create the legs. I spread them with that fantastic hazelnut cream we all love so much and sprinkled them with brown sprinkles to give a “hairy” effect. Finally, two sugar eyes transformed them into sweet, spooky creatures (too cute, however, to truly scare!). Perfect for a Halloween buffet, a birthday party, a themed snack, or even just for an afternoon of fun in the kitchen with kids maybe when it rains outside. Come on… come read the recipe!

Chocolate Spiders
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Cheap
  • Preparation time: 20 Minutes
  • Portions: 6Pieces
  • Cooking methods: Oven
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: Halloween

Ingredients for 6 chocolate spiders

  • 2.5 oz dark chocolate
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg (medium)
  • 1/4 cup butter (soft)
  • 3/4 cup type 1 flour
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 48 mikado sticks (8 for each spider)
  • hazelnut cream
  • chocolate sprinkles
  • 12 sugar eyes

Tools

I prepared the batter for these chocolate spiders with the Thermomix, but you will find instructions to make it without further below.

  • 1 Mixer (my Thermomix)
  • 1 Muffin pan
  • 6 Cupcake liners

Preparation of chocolate spiders

  • Chop the dark chocolate into pieces, put them in the bowl and chop finely (10 seconds at speed 8).

  • Then, add the sugar, egg, and soft butter. Mix for 20 seconds at speed 6, gathering the mixture towards the center after the first 10 seconds.

  • It’s time to add the flour, unsweetened cocoa, a pinch of salt, baking powder, and milk. Knead everything for 40 seconds at speed 5, gathering the mixture towards the center of the bowl after the first 20 seconds.

  • Pour the batter into six cupcake liners previously placed inside a muffin pan. Do not fill them to the brim because they will expand during baking. I used silicone liners and lightly buttered them. This way, I removed them very easily after baking without damaging the muffins. If you want to purchase them, you can find them by clicking HERE.

  • Bake the muffins in a preheated static oven at 355°F for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and let them cool completely before removing from the liners.

  • Melt the chocolate in a bain-marie or microwave and let it cool slightly. In a bowl, beat the soft butter with sugar using an electric mixer. Add the egg and continue beating. Then add the sifted flour and cocoa, and add a pinch of salt. Soften with milk. Also add the now-cooled melted chocolate. Finally, sift in the baking powder and mix carefully.

  • Cut the legs from the Mikado sticks. You can make them any length you prefer.

  • Now insert the sticks into the muffin: four on each side.

  • Spread a bit of hazelnut cream on the top of the muffin.

  • Finally, sprinkle the cream with dark chocolate sprinkles to give the impression of a hairy spider and place the two eyes. These can be found in candy stores or online. If you want, you can purchase them by clicking HERE. Alternatively, you could use two sugar-coated chocolates or two Smarties, onto which you will drop a bit of chocolate to create the pupil.

  • Your chocolate spiders are ready to be served. Happy Halloween. Paola.
