The mojito is a delicious and refreshing Cuban summer long drink based on white rum, lime, and mint. There are some small differences between the original recipe and the version now called “European.” In the original, white cane sugar, sparkling water, and lime juice are used. In the European version, instead, raw cane sugar, lime wedges, and soda are often used. I’ll show you how I made it… and I guarantee it’s delicious! And if you want to get creative, I suggest trying the strawberry mojito, the pomegranate one, and the black one. Mmmmmmm!

Ingredients for a classic mojito
- A few leaves mint (about ten)
- 1 lime
- 0.35 oz raw cane sugar (about 2 teaspoons)
- 2 cups ice
- white rum
- soda (alternatively sprite)
Tools
- 1 Glass tall
- 1 Pestle
Preparation of the classic mojito
Place the mint leaves, ½ lime cut into wedges, and the cane sugar at the bottom of a tall glass.
Gently press everything with a pestle.
Then fill the glass with ice that is cracked and not crushed or left in cubes. I, very craftily, put the cubes inside a clean cloth and break them with a meat mallet.
At this point, add the white rum: the amount can vary from 1.5 to 2.5 ounces depending on personal taste.
Finally, complete with soda (or sparkling water if you prefer). The soda naturally gives the cocktail a sweeter taste (which I prefer). Alternatively, you can also use sprite.
Serve the cocktail immediately, garnishing it with lime slices and a few mint sprigs. Insert two nice straws, and you’re done. Enjoy! Paola
