Quick Savory Donuts

No rising is needed to make these savory donuts. Mix (by hand or in a mixer), shape, and bake. So… out of bread? No problem! This recipe can be the solution. Moreover, the speck and chives-based dough makes them really tasty. Let’s go… let’s see together how to prepare them!

Ingredients for 8 Savory Donuts

In this recipe, I used self-rising flour. It allows us to avoid any resting time. It’s now available in almost every supermarket, but if you can’t find it, you can mix regular all-purpose flour with a packet of instant yeast for savory pies.

If you prefer, you can replace the speck with smoked bacon or, for a milder version, with cooked ham.

  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg (medium)
  • 3.2 oz speck (thick slices)
  • chives (a few stems)
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 3/4 tsp salt

Tools

You can also make the dough for these savory donuts with a mixer.

  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Food Processor
  • 1 Baking Sheet
  • Scissors

Preparation of the Savory Donuts

  • Sift the flour into a bowl and add the milk.

  • Give a first stir with a spoon, then add the egg, oil, and salt and incorporate them into the mixture.

  • Then also add the finely chopped speck (I put it in a mixer) and the chives cut with scissors.

  • Knead with your hands first inside the bowl, then transfer everything onto a lightly floured work surface and work vigorously with your hands until you get a smooth and homogeneous dough.

  • Form a flattened dough ball and cut it into pieces.

  • With each piece, form a roll 8 inches long and close the ends to create a small donut. Proceed the same way until all the dough is used up. It’s an easily workable dough that allows you to put together any scraps.

  • Place the savory donuts on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake in a preheated static oven at 392°F for 13/15 minutes. Once baked, they should be well golden.

Remove the savory donuts from the oven and let them cool slightly before enjoying. Enjoy! Paola.
