Apple donuts on a stick are slices of apple covered in chocolate and decorated in various ways, for a colorful, tasty snack that’s also rich in fruit. They’re also great to prepare for Carnival, instead of the usual fried donuts, for a healthier yet delicious treat.

For the preparation of these donuts, I chose Golden Delicious apples from Mela Val Venosta, the queen variety among apples, loved by everyone for its sweetness and juicy flesh. Moreover, it’s a type of apple that’s easily available all year round, even as an organic product.

  • Wash and dry the Golden Delicious Val Venosta apples and cut each apple into 5-6 slices, about 3/8 inch thick, horizontally. Use a cookie cutter or a small pastry cutter to cut out the core from the center of each apple slice.

Arrange the apple slices side by side on a sheet of parchment paper.

  • Cover the surface of each apple with the melted white or dark chocolate, then garnish the still-soft chocolate with sugar beads, raisins, marshmallows, colored sprinkles, and/or grated coconut. Feel free to unleash your creativity and tastes to create many different and colorful apple donuts!

Finally, make a small cut on the outer edge of each apple slice and insert a wooden stick. Alternatively, you can serve them without a stick, simply arranged on a plate like donuts.

Tips

If you prepare the apple donuts in advance, you can also brush the back with lemon juice to prevent the apple flesh from browning.
