Mini savory strudels with phyllo pastry

The mini savory strudels with phyllo pastry are delicious and crunchy, perfect to serve with an aperitif, but also as a second course. Indeed, they can be easily eaten with hands, without necessarily using cutlery.

They are quick and easy to prepare, so they can also be made at the last moment. The mini strudels with phyllo pastry are also very versatile as they can be filled in many different ways. These I prepared in a very classic way, with ham and cheese, but in the suggestions, you will find many other ideas for preparing alternative and appetizing strudels.

Mini savory strudels with phyllo pastry
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Preparation time: 20 Minutes
  • Portions: 8 mini strudels
  • Cooking methods: Oven
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All seasons

Ingredients

  • 17.6 oz cheese (melting)
  • 16 sheets phyllo pastry
  • 14.1 oz cooked ham
  • to taste vegetable oil
  • to taste sesame seeds (optional)

Steps

  • To prepare the mini savory strudels, cut the cheese into cubes and set aside.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (convection) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Remove the phyllo pastry sheets from the package, unroll them, take the first sheet and place it on the work surface. Cover the remaining sheets with a damp towel in the meantime, as they tend to dry out quickly being so thin.

Brush the phyllo pastry sheet you placed on the work surface with vegetable oil. Place a second phyllo pastry sheet on top, brush it also with vegetable oil, and fold it in half lengthwise. Place two slices of ham and some cheese cubes on the surface, leaving about 1/2 inch along the edges. Fold the two long sides towards the center, partially covering the filling, then roll everything up to form a mini strudel. Brush with vegetable oil, place on the baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and sprinkle with sesame seeds as desired.

Proceed in the same way with the remaining ingredients.

Suggestions

As for the filling, of course, you can vary it in many ways:

– use prosciutto crudo or salami instead of cooked ham

– add grilled zucchini or bell peppers

– add sautéed mushrooms

– prepare vegetarian mini strudels with lots of stir-fried vegetables

– use different cheeses to create very stringy and tasty mini strudels

You can also serve the mini strudels accompanied by tomato sauce or another dipping sauce.
