Ingredients

  • 4 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup sunflower oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 packet baking powder
  • 1 lemon zest (grated)
  • as needed vegetable oil (for frying)
  • as needed sugar (for coating)

Tools

  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Whisk
  • 1 Rolling Pin
  • 1 Donut Cutter
  • 1 Pot
  • 1 Fork

How to Make Soft Donuts with Baking Powder

  • In a large bowl, break the egg and mix it with the sugar, sunflower oil, milk, and the grated lemon zest. Blend well with a whisk.

  • Sift the flour together with the packet of baking powder. Gradually incorporate it into the liquids, first mixing with a fork and then kneading by hand on a work surface until you obtain a smooth, non-sticky dough ball.

  • Without needing a rest, roll out the dough with the rolling pin until you get a sheet about 0.4 inches thick.

  • Cut out your donuts using a donut cutter. Knead the scraps again so as not to waste anything! (The number of donuts depends on the size of the donut cutter. If you don’t have a donut cutter, you can use a glass and a cap for the center hole).

  • Heat plenty of vegetable oil in a pan. When it’s hot enough, dip a few donuts at a time.

  • As soon as the donuts rise to the surface and begin to puff up, turn them over. Let them brown evenly.

  • Drain the donuts on absorbent paper. As soon as they dry but are still hot, roll them immediately in granulated sugar. This is essential for the sugar to adhere perfectly.

  • Enjoy.

Storage

These donuts are at their best when freshly made. However, you can store them under a glass dome or in a food bag for 1-2 days.

FAQ (Questions and Answers)

  • Can I bake them in the oven?

If you really don’t want to fry them, you can bake them in a static oven at 350°F for about 15-20 minutes, but remember that the texture will be more similar to a biscuit.
