Ingredients
- 1 sheet puff pastry
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Grana Padano cheese, grated
- oregano
- 1 egg
- sesame seeds (or poppy seeds, to taste)
- salt
Tools
- Baking sheet
- Cookie cutter star-shaped
- Bowl
- Brush
Preparation
Pour the tomato paste into a bowl, add a pinch of salt, a small handful of oregano, and mix.
If your paste is too thick and you can’t mix it, you can add a drizzle of oil or a teaspoon of water.
Unroll the puff pastry on the work surface and divide it into two equal parts.
Brush one half with the tomato, then sprinkle with the Grana (1).
Overlap the other half of the pastry and press lightly.
Using a cookie cutter, cut out the stars (2), trying to discard as little as possible. The number depends on the size of the cutter; in my case, I made 24 stars.
Arrange the puff pastry stars on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, then brush them with the egg wash and sprinkle with seeds as desired (3).
Place the baking sheet in a fan oven at 375°F and bake the stars for 12-15 minutes, or until they are nicely golden brown on the surface.
The puff pastry stars with tomato and oregano are ready to be served… perfect for holiday appetizers!
Tips and Notes
If you don’t want the pastry to puff too much, you can lightly press it with a rolling pin before cutting the stars.
You can also flavor the tomato with other herbs or spices (basil, thyme, chili, garlic powder…).
You can omit the Grana or replace it with another grated cheese.
The cooking times vary depending on your oven and the size of the stars.
