Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (rectangular)
  • 3.5 oz tuna in oil (drained)
  • 3.5 oz ricotta
  • 1.75 oz cream cheese
  • Half red onion
  • 1 egg
  • sesame seeds (or mixed seeds)
  • oregano (or other herbs as desired)
  • salt

Tools

  • Baking tray
  • Bowl
  • Brush
  • Colander
  • Cutter

Preparation

  • Drain the tuna well and flake it with a fork.

Clean the onion and slice it very thinly, using a knife or mandoline. Season with a pinch of salt.

  • Place the ricotta and cream cheese in a bowl and mix with a spoon to create a cream.

Add the tuna and onion, and mix.

  • Unroll the puff pastry on your work surface and spread the filling on half of it.

Fold over the other half and press lightly.

Using a cutter or knife, cut into squares of the same size, without separating them. I made 35, but you can make them larger if you prefer.

  • Transfer the filled pastry to a baking tray and brush the surface with beaten egg. Finally, sprinkle with sesame seeds and a pinch of oregano.

  • Place in a fan oven at 375°F and bake for about 25 minutes, until the pastry is golden and dry. Adjust the time according to your oven.

At the end, remove from the oven and cut again with a knife to separate the bites.

  • The quick tuna and onion puffs are ready to be served, great both warm and at room temperature!

Tips and Notes

3.5 oz of drained tuna equates to approximately 2 small 2.8 oz cans, or one large 5.6 oz can.

You can use only ricotta, or only cream cheese, totaling 5.3 oz.

You can use red onion or another variety, as long as it isn’t too strong in flavor.

FAQ

You can make cylindrical puffs; for the procedure, you can refer to the recipe for Spinach Puff Pastry Bites.
