Homemade Flour Tortillas

The flour tortillas are a staple recipe in Mexican cuisine. These tortillas are similar to flatbreads, made with a simple yeast-free dough using a few simple ingredients: flour, water, salt, and vegetable oil. Perfect for wrapping meat or vegetable fillings, tortillas are also used to make specialties like fajitas or the burrito. Easy and quick to make, with this recipe you can organize a tex-mex style evening at home and make friends and family happy.

Homemade Flour Tortillas
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Cheap
  • Rest time: 30 Minutes
  • Preparation time: 15 Minutes
  • Portions: 5 pieces
  • Cooking methods: Stovetop

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • cup hot water
  • 2 tbsp peanut oil
  • 1 tsp salt

Steps

  • To make the flour tortillas, pour the hot water and oil into a bowl.

  • Whisk together and then add the salt. Mix to completely dissolve the salt and gradually add the flour.

  • Transfer the mixture to a pastry board and continue kneading by hand until smooth and homogeneous.

  • Wrap the dough ball in plastic wrap and let it rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.

  • After the resting time, divide the dough into 5 portions of 80 g each. Roll out each piece with a rolling pin on a lightly floured board to form a very thin disk.

  • Heat the cast iron griddle and cook one tortilla at a time, for 30 seconds on each side. Once ready, cover the tortillas with a clean cloth: this step is crucial for elasticity.

  • Fill the tortillas as desired and serve them warm. Enjoy!
