Fennel with Parmesan Gratin in an air fryer is a really delicious side dish!

During cooking, a crispy and tasty crust forms while the Parmesan-gratinated fennel remains soft and juicy.

A genuine side dish ideal to serve as an accompaniment to both meat and fish dishes or for a light lunch.

Gratinated fennel is prepared in just a few minutes, requiring a quick sauté in a pan with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and aromatic herbs before putting them in the air fryer for just a few minutes.

Fennel with Parmesan is best enjoyed hot, like battered fennel, crispy puff pastry effect fennel, fragrant orange-marinated fennel, tasty Mediterranean fennel, creamy gratin fennel, and lemon-grilled fennel.

And if you don’t have an air fryer, you can also cook them in the oven; it will just take a few more minutes.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Fennel

  • 2 fennel
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • to taste thyme
  • to taste extra virgin olive oil
  • to taste fine salt

Steps for Air Fryer Fennel

To prepare the delicious fennel in the air fryer, start by washing them thoroughly under running water and removing the outer leaves that are hard and damaged.

  • Cut the fennel in half and then into slices that are not too thin.

  • You can use a mandoline to get slices of the same thickness.

  • Grease a pan with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, and cook the fennel for about 5-8 minutes, covered and over medium-low heat, turning them to the side.

  • Salt and add thyme. If they dry too much, add a bit of water during cooking.

  • When they become soft, place them in the air fryer basket lined with parchment paper.

  • Cover with grated Parmesan cheese. Try not to overlap the fennel too much. If necessary, make two separate batches and cook for 7-8 minutes at 356°F.

  • Once cooked, serve hot to enjoy them crunchy.

Storage and Tips

Fennel with Parmesan Gratin can be stored for two days in the fridge in an airtight container

Allow them to cool completely at room temperature before storing.

To reheat, place in the air fryer at 356°F for 2 minutes or in the oven at 356°F for about 5-8 minutes, to make the surface crispy again (avoid the microwave, which makes them soggy).

You can freeze them cooked, already portioned, in containers or freezer bags.

They last up to 2 months.

For best enjoyment, let them thaw in the fridge overnight and then reheat in the oven at 374°F for 15 minutes.
