The spicy chickpea hummus is a delicious cream made from cooked and mashed chickpeas, enriched with tahini (a sesame seed sauce), lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, and spices. It is a traditional dish of Middle Eastern cuisine.
The preparation starts with dry chickpeas, which are soaked for several hours before being cooked until tender. They are then chopped or blended together with the other ingredients.
Tahini, a thick paste made from ground sesame seeds, adds a rich and creamy flavor to the hummus. Lemon juice gives a touch of acidity and freshness, while garlic adds a pungent and aromatic taste.
The spices used can vary, but the most common are cumin, paprika, and parsley. Olive oil is often used to achieve a softer consistency and add a slightly fruity flavor.
Chickpea hummus is an extremely versatile food. It is often served as an appetizer with pita bread or fresh vegetables. It can also be used as a dressing or accompaniment for dishes like falafel, salads, or even as a spread on sandwiches or rolls.
From a nutritional point of view, chickpea hummus is rich in plant-based proteins, fibers, and healthy fats. It is considered a healthy food and is often chosen as a healthy alternative to richer dressings.

Steps for the preparation of Spicy Chickpea Hummus
To prepare the delicious chickpea hummus, start by draining the previously boiled or pre-cooked chickpeas, keeping aside half a glass of their water. If you use dry chickpeas instead of pre-cooked canned ones, make sure to choose high-quality and organic chickpeas, and cook them until they are soft. This will help achieve a creamier consistency and better flavor.
Then place them in the cup of the immersion blender, along with the lemon juice, tahini sauce (which you need to mix well before using as the oil tends to separate), salt, optionally half a clove of garlic, and two tablespoons of chickpea water. Then activate the mixer and blend the ingredients for at least 2-3 minutes or until a smooth and creamy consistency is achieved. If necessary, add a little more water to reach the desired consistency.
Transfer the hummus to a bowl and garnish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of cumin or freshly chopped parsley. It is ready to be served and enjoyed and…
Enjoy your tasting from Barbara!
Storage and Notes
Store the hummus in an airtight container in the fridge. It stays fresh for about 3 days. If the hummus dries slightly after a while, you can add a little water or olive oil to restore the creamy consistency.
Experiment with additions like red chili, chopped black olives, toasted sesame seeds, or fresh herbs like cilantro or basil to create customized hummus variations.
