Chestnuts are among the most typical fruits of autumn. Their sweet flavor lends itself to many recipes, but the most classic way to enjoy them is as Roasted Chestnuts. With the tricks I will show you, you’ll have perfectly cooked and slightly charred microwave chestnuts.

  • 1.1 lbs chestnuts
  • 2 cups water
  • to taste coarse salt

  • 1 Clip Chestnut cutter

How to Cook Chestnuts in the Microwave

  • Score each chestnut using a sharp knife or a chestnut clip, making an X on the back of each one. Do this step carefully to avoid them bursting during cooking.

  • Now bring water to a boil in a large pot, and once boiling, add salt and the chestnuts.

  • Let them boil for 10 minutes.

  • After 10 minutes, drain them and place them on the crisp plate, making sure to keep the cuts facing up and spaced apart.

  • Cook with the Crisp Function for 10 minutes.

    Alternatively: Cook at maximum power with Microwave + Grill combination for 10 minutes, then activate the grill for another 5 minutes.

    Once cooked, we can place them on a plate and cover them with a damp cloth for 3 or 4 minutes. This way, they will peel perfectly.

Additional Tips, Notes, and Tricks

For this recipe, I used typical Irpinia chestnuts, which are very large and sweet. Quality chestnuts for roasted chestnuts or even ‘marroni’ will work well, as very small ones may turn out drier.

If, after cooking, you want an even more charred effect, we can toss the chestnuts for a few minutes on a very hot grill on the stovetop.

The damp cloth can also be sprayed with red wine to give a stronger aroma (I’ve tried it, it’s amazing, I recommend it)
