Who says porridge can only be sweet? Discover this savory, tasty, and comforting version of Tomato Savory Porridge.
The porridge recipe originated in the Middle Ages as a poor dish (originally, it was made only with water and simple oat flakes), economical, extremely simple but substantial. Today it has become a very famous dish, easy and rich in substance. Many choose to replace water with milk or plant-based drinks, to achieve a creamier consistency.
But I’ll show it to you in a savory version. This dish is about to enter your list of favorite comfort foods, trust me! 😉
We’ve already seen the vegetable version but this tomato one will win you over.

Ingredients for Tomato Savory Porridge
- 1 1/4 cups oat flakes
- 1 1/2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce
- 3 1/2 oz ground chicken
- to taste salt
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 clove garlic
How to prepare Tomato Savory Porridge
Sauté in a small pot a drizzle of oil with the garlic clove.
Add the ground chicken and let it brown, adjusting with salt.
Now pour in the tomato sauce and add half a cup of water. Let it flavor well for a few minutes.
Bring to a boil and add the oat flakes.
Keep the flame low and stir gently for about 10 minutes until the desired consistency is reached. I like it soft but not ‘mushy’.
If it dries out too much during cooking, add a little water.
As soon as it’s ready. Turn off the heat and add the Parmesan.
Mix and serve. Drizzle raw oil directly on the plate.
Tips for you
After mixing with the Parmesan, before serving, let the porridge rest in the pot for 5-6 minutes. It will become even more flavorful!
If you don’t like ground chicken, you can replace it with diced speck, bacon, or don’t add any protein, just tomato.
Additionally, you can make this dish completely vegan by omitting the Parmesan or replacing it with nutritional yeast.
