  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: Spring

Ingredients for the Sweet Easter Braid

  • 4 cups Manitoba flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • Half lemon zest
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tsp fresh yeast
  • 1/4 cup butter (soft)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Strega liqueur
  • as needed honey
  • as needed sprinkles

How to prepare the Sweet Easter Braid

For the dough: Grate only the yellow part of the lemon and mix it with the lemon.
Separately, heat the milk until warm and dissolve the yeast.
In a large bowl or mixer, add the Manitoba flour, the egg, the liqueur, the sugar with the lemon zest.
Start kneading by also adding the warmed milk where you activated the yeast and gradually also the butter.
Work until you get a soft, smooth, and elastic dough.
If the dough is too soft, add a bit of flour; if it is too hard, add a bit of water or milk.

How to form the braid: Form a dough ball and divide it into three equal parts.
On a lightly floured board, braid the three parts together to form a braid.
Cover the braid with a clean cloth and let it rise until it doubles in size.
This will take about 1-2 hours.
When almost risen, preheat the oven to 392°F (200°C).

For baking: Brush the surface of the braid with a little milk and bake for 30 minutes.
During baking, do the toothpick test; if it is still moist inside, cover with a sheet of parchment paper and bake for another 10 minutes.
Once ready, let it cool on a wire rack.

To finish our Easter Braid: brush the surface with honey and sprinkle with colorful sprinkles.
Now serve your delicious Sweet Easter Braid and wish everyone a Happy Easter!

USEFUL TIPS

Fresh and quality ingredients: Be sure to use fresh and high-quality ingredients to achieve the best possible result.

Ingredient temperature: Make sure the milk is slightly warm when you add it to the mixture, so it activates the yeast properly.

Knead carefully: Knead the dough well until it becomes elastic and homogeneous. This will ensure that the braid is soft and fluffy.

Consistency control: During kneading, check the dough’s consistency and adjust by adding a little flour if it’s too soft or a little liquid if it’s too hard.
