Detox Mallow Salad

Wonderful Mallow history and properties:

The malva sylvestris belongs to the mallow family. Its name derives from the Greek malakos (calming and sweet) and from the Latin mollire which means emollient.

You have surely encountered it on walks with its 5 charming pink petals and purple streaks.

As the name mallow shows, it was widely used by Greeks and Romans at that time, the Pythagoreans for example considered it a sacred plant.

Pythagoras wrote about mallow:

sow mallow, but do not eat it; it is such a great good that it should be reserved for our neighbor rather than used selfishly for our benefit

But we are selfish and add it to our recipes.

The Celtics believed that placing mallow seeds on the eyes of the deceased would ward off evil spirits and accompany the deceased to heaven. In the Middle Ages, all calming potions contained mallow.

Finally, if you believe in the symbolism of flowers, mallow is associated with love and maternal understanding.

Mallow and recipes

In summer, the fields are brightened by the lilac color of the mallow but not everyone knows how good and beneficial this wild medicinal plant is, and it can easily be included in our recipes such as salads, soups, and infusions.

Sometimes I have prepared mallow infusion and the amaranth and mallow soup this time I used the tenderest leaves and flowers to mix them into a detoxifying salad.

If you dry the mallow, you can keep it in a glass jar and use the little flowers even for wholemeal spelt cookies.

Mallow medicinal properties

Mallow is ideal for those who, like me, have a delicate stomach.
Mallow is rich in mucilage that coats the stomach walls with a thin film that soothes any burning.

In winter periods, mallow is excellent against colds, joint pain, it soothes the throat and boosts the immune system with its rich vitamin content.

Enthusiastic about wild herbs, when I am in the countryside, I always collect something to bring to the table.
I don’t fill baskets or bags, I collect only the minimum necessary for a fresh and colorful dish.
Let us always remember to respect nature and the beauties surrounding us.

Be careful, do not pick randomly, first attend a good wild herb picking course with an expert or herbalist professor. It is very easy to make mistakes and perhaps collect something toxic, be careful!!!!!
