Ingredients for 4 people
- 3 1/4 cups red wine
- 2 sticks cinnamon stick
- 2 star anise
- 4 cloves
- 1 tbsp cardamom
- 2 leaves bay leaves
- 1/2 orange
- 1/2 lemon
Tools
- 1 Knife
- 1 Cutting board
- 1 Pot
- 1 Strainer fine mesh
Procedure
The secret to a good mulled wine is… in the wine! The best wine for mulled wine? Choose full-bodied red wines, of quality, with a high sugar content that will make your hot drink better.
I recommend using wines based on Sangiovese, Cabernet, or Merlot. My favorite wine? Schiava from Trentino!
First, start the preparation by slicing the orange and then squeezing the lemon juice.
After extracting the juice, take a peeler or knife and remove the lemon peel without the white part, which would be bitter and ruin your mulled wine.
At this point, put the wine and all the other ingredients in the pot and turn on the heat to medium/low. Cook everything gently to extract the aromas of the other ingredients.
After about 15 minutes, strain the mixture, discard the seeds, and keep only the star anise, lemon peel, and orange slices you used to flavor the wine.
Your mulled wine is ready!
Serving Tips:
Mulled wine is a drink to serve warm, but not boiling. It should be possible to sip the mulled wine without burning yourself or having to wait too long for it to cool.
I recommend serving it at the ideal temperature, once it is warm, just complete the cups with fresh orange slices, star anise, and cinnamon sticks.
