Steps
Preparing potato spirals is easier than it seems. All you need is a mandolin, a bit of skill, and your air fryer will do the rest. Here are the steps to follow.
Wash the potatoes well, keeping the skin if it is thin and well-cleaned. Insert a long wooden skewer through each potato lengthwise.
Place the mandolin on a surface and, tilting the potato slightly, slice it, rotating it around the skewer. A continuous spiral will naturally form.
Gently spread the spirals along the skewer to space the slices for even cooking.Place the spirals in the air fryer basket, making sure to space them well. Spray or brush the spirals with extra virgin olive oil.
Add a pinch of salt and a sprinkle of black pepper (or preferred spices).
Cook at 392°F for about 15 minutes, turning them halfway through to make them crispy on all sides.
Check the browning and, if necessary, continue cooking for a few more minutes.
Storage
Potato spirals should be enjoyed hot, right after making them, to maintain their crispiness. They do not store well: no leftovers, they disappear immediately!
Tips and Variations
• You can add sweet paprika, rosemary, or garlic powder for an even more tantalizing flavor.
• If you don’t have long skewers, you can also cook them ‘loose’ like thin chips.
• Use firm potatoes to get more regular and compact spirals.
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
I don’t have an air fryer, can I use the oven?
Of course! Place them on a baking sheet with parchment paper and bake at 392°F with convection for about 20-25 minutes, turning them halfway through.
Can they be prepared in advance?
You can prepare and keep them raw already skewered, but I recommend cooking them on the spot for perfect crispiness.
