A great alternative to pizza sticks, these delicious treats are easy to prepare and perfect for any occasion, from a snack to an aperitif. Their crunchiness, combined with the aroma of olive oil and salt, makes them irresistible, and in this version, you can customize them with your favorite spices, making them unique and tasty.
This recipe allows you to make about 10 crunchy bread sticks, perfect to enjoy on their own or accompanied by cheeses, cold cuts, or vegetables. They are also a great way to use up flour at home, creating a snack that the whole family will love.

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Economical
  • Preparation time: 30 Minutes
  • Portions: 10 Pieces
  • Cooking methods: Oven
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All seasons

Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 7/8 cup water
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • to taste extra virgin olive oil
  • to taste Maldon salt
  • to taste spices (I use oregano)

Tools

  • Pasta Machine
  • Rolling Pin

Steps

  • Start by mixing the flour with water, olive oil, and salt in a bowl.

Use a spoon to blend the ingredients until you get a homogeneous mixture.
Transfer the mixture to a floured work surface and begin kneading with your hands. Continue kneading until you obtain a smooth and compact ball.

Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for 10 minutes. This step will help relax the dough, making it easier to roll out.
After the rest time, take the dough and divide it into about 10 balls of 65 g each.
Roll each ball out on a floured surface using a rolling pin until you get a thin shape about 1/8 inch thick.

If you want to use a pasta machine, I recommend passing each stick through setting 1 four times and then through setting 3 four times. This way, you’ll achieve an even thickness and perfect crunchiness! Place the bread sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Before baking, brush each stick with a bit of olive oil and add Maldon salt flakes.

If you wish, you can also add spices to taste, such as oregano, rosemary, or paprika, for an extra touch of flavor.
Bake in a preheated fan oven at 430°F for about 10 minutes, or until the sticks are golden brown and crispy.
Once baked, let the bread sticks cool on a rack for a few minutes before serving.

Tips

If you want to make the bread sticks even crunchier, you can bake them for a couple of minutes longer, but be careful not to burn them.

• The bread sticks are very versatile, so you can enhance them with fresh or dried herbs, like thyme, basil, or parsley, for an even more intense flavor.

• You can also experiment with exotic spices, like cumin or curry, for an original touch.

• Serve them as a snack or as an accompaniment to soups, salads, or meat dishes. They are also perfect for an aperitif with friends!
