Chili Gratinated Onions

Chili gratinated onions baked with breadcrumbs may seem like a simple side dish, but they are much more, starting with the onion, a treasure trove of goodness. The onion contains aromatic substances that have almost medicinal virtues because they contain sulfur components that act almost like a natural antibiotic; its essential oils help our body on several fronts, both for the intestines and the airways. In short, onions are very useful for purifying the body. Thanks to these health benefits, we should consider onions more as a side dish rather than just as a flavoring for sautés and various sauces. There are many ways to use onions in cooking, and I will list a few: they can be glazed, stuffed, sweet and sour, baked in foil, stewed, and let’s not forget onion soup, a fantastic first course with toasted bread croutons.

My name is Pina, and my passion is food and cooking in general. On the blog, I focus on regional dishes like those from my birthplace, Sicily. I also feature dishes from Lazio, the region that has hosted me for over 40 years, but in general, I cover all Italian regions. Traveling and exploring is my second passion, so I couldn't leave out dishes from around the "World" on my blog. My blog is divided into simple and essential sections like appetizers, first courses, main courses, side dishes, bread and leavened products, jams and preserves, wines and wineries, and of course, travels. Desserts are included, and finally, there is a dedicated corner for gluten-free options. Easy recipes, explained step by step and always updated.
