BEFANA’S STOCKING COOKIES, a very simple recipe, sweets for breakfast or snack, also perfect to put in the stocking on Epiphany day.
If I had some free time, one thing was sure: making cookies for Befana’s stocking. They are those homemade sweets that smell like Epiphany, simple, genuine, and perfect for both breakfast and snack, but especially to tuck into the Befana’s stocking along with some candy. The classic Befana cookies that everyone loves, both adults and children.
The Befana’s stocking cookies are really easy to make, nothing complicated. The base is an orange shortcrust pastry, fragrant and soft, ideal for homemade cookies. I didn’t even have the cookie cutters, so I cut them by hand, but the beauty of these Epiphany cookies is precisely this: they turn out great anyway. Confirmed by my daughter, who literally devoured them.
With a few ingredients, you can make simple cookies for Befana, then you can have fun decorating them. I dip them in melted chocolate and finish them with chocolate sprinkles, chopped pistachios, or crushed hazelnuts. Perfect as stocking sweets, as cookies for children, but also to bring to the table on Epiphany days.

- Difficulty: Very easy
- Cost: Very cheap
- Preparation time: 20 Minutes
- Portions: 6-8
- Cooking methods: Oven, Air Fryer
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: Epiphany
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour (the one you usually use)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- orange zest
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup chocolate
- chocolate sprinkles
Steps
Pour the sifted flour with the baking powder on a pastry board or into the food processor.
Make a hole in the center and add the sugar, grated orange zest, chopped butter, and then the egg.
Then work the ingredients, if needed add a bit of milk or flour if it’s too soft.
Then wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest in the fridge for half an hour, it would be better overnight if you have time.
Melt the chocolate in a double boiler and set aside.
After the time has passed, take the dough and roll it out on a floured pastry board.
If you have stocking-shaped cookie cutters it will be quicker, I made them freehand, I cut the pastry with a knife into the shape of a stocking about 2.75 inches and from that, I made the other cookies.
Place them on the oven tray lined with parchment paper and bake at 356°F for about 15 minutes, they should lightly brown.
Take them out of the oven and let them cool slightly, then start covering the cookies with the melted chocolate only halfway, as in the photo.
Then arrange them on a plate and decorate with chocolate sprinkles.
Let them air dry and the Befana’s stocking cookies are ready.
Bon appétit
